choose "shutdown" from the menu. but make sure that a power off actually occurs.

if it won't shut off by itself - yes, use the power switch and/or pull the plug


I have found that a lot of times if I ask someone to "reboot" they just choose "restart" from the shutdown menu - when what I actually want them to do is choose "shut down", make sure the computer powers off - and then turn the power back on.
