The Maritime provinces have a rich heritage of folksongs The regsion's mix of cultures andpeople includes Scottish, Irish, English, French, German and Afro-American. Seafaring, logging, fishing and farming are long established and well reflected in the folksong traditions. So are songs of courtship and love, tragedy, voyages and adventure.

The songs in this collection have been chosen because they are enjoyable to sing, for people of all ages. There are 90 songs in all, including versions of well-known songs such as When the Saints Go Marchin' In and The Nova Scotia Song as well as less familiar tunes.

For each song there is a brief introduction, chording information, the melodic line and words to all the verses.

This book is based on the collections of Helen Creighton and other distinguished Maritime folklorists. Authors Kaye Pottie and Vernon Ellis reviewed thousands of folksongs in these collections to cull the selection included in this book. Many are published here for the first time.
