Yeah Amos....."Sugar Pops are Tops!"

Gabby Hayes is probably most associated with the classic sidekick role in B movie westerns, often with Roy Rogers. Gene Autry had several, the two most prominent were Smiley Burnette (later on Petticaot Junction-train engineer) and Pat Buttram (later on the sister series of Green Acres oddly enough). Ther was of course the famous "Hey Cisco---Hey Pancho" between Duncan Renaldo and Leo Carrillo. Funny thing though....on all of those TV shows, I don't remember the sponsor except for Wild Bill and Gene Autry who was sponsored by Wrigley's Doublemint Gum.

There were an awful lot of 50's shows closely associated with only one sponsor because that was the way of things then. Geritol sponsored the quiz "21" and Revlon sponsored "The $64,000. Question." The funniest story I recently learned relating to that type of single sponsorship was that in the early days of Sid Caesar's show, the sponsor was Admiral Televisions. The Caesar show was such a hit that Admiral couldn't keep up with the demand for new sets and had to build another factory.......the problem being that they couldn't afford the factory and the sponsorchip both so they had to cancel the Caesar show......the first time and I think the only time a show was cancelled because it was too successful! Sid and his gang were actually off the air for a few months until someone else came along.

From those shows the main slogan I recall was for "DeSoto" with "Tell 'em Groucho sent ya'!" Of course as someone else mentioned Uncle Miltie (and before him Ed Wynn) said that "You could trust your car to the man who wears the star." And when Amos above mentioned Chevy and "See the USA, in your Chevrolet, America's inviting you to call, See the USA in your Chevrolet, America's the greatest land of all.".......Well that always ended with a big "MUHWAW" sound that we all did emulating the thrown kiss from Dinah Shore.
