Shaving the upper cheeks and lower part of the neck helps to define where the (alleged) beard is supposed to be. Do that daily, let the rest grow, and TRY to ignore the itching. As already said, beard growth is very individual, and it may take a month before you don't look like you just forgot to shave and 2-3 months before it starts to look like a beard. Since you say that your in a place where you don't care what people around you say about your facial adornments, go for it!
