It was a dead heat between Portugal and Spain for most despicable brutality against the orginial inhabitants of America. The French, on the other hand, tended to get along rather well with the Native American tribes, and often adopted their cultural ways and intermarried with them. Sadly, the French colonial government was almost unbelievably corrupt and incompetent. They had one thing going for them...Montcalm. He was a superb general and a true gentleman, constantly hobbled by a corrupt and wretched civilian adminstration that he fought valiantly to protect until his untimely death.
