In its original form it was not regarded as suitable for the children of the age, so I'm told.

The lyrics don't suggest it would be entirely appropriate subject matter for a 19th Century sunday school, though a church choir might be OK. It has a sort of vaudeville/music hall feel to it, though, to my mind.
