Subject: RE: Last Shanty Swap at China Sea-11/23 (Maine)
I taped -- for my own personal use, definitely not for resale -- because I had seen that Brian taping at the last one was acceptable (and I know his was for personal, not commercial use). I very often tape sessions, singarounds, parties -- and even some stage performances of friends. I don't hide it. I sometimes ask someone to sing a song into the recorder for me, especially if the song is unavailable in any other form. It's certainly not for commercial use (and the quality is definitely not professional), just to learn songs and remember a wonderful afternoon or evening. And to tape my own contribution to the merriment, of course. (It's useful to know what I sound like, sometimes.)

And it's not to avoid paying money for anyone's CD or tape -- I've purchased Roll & Go's CD several months ago and I bought Jim Chard's at the sing (and it doesn't have any of the songs that he sang Saturday on it). And I own multiple recordings of Kendall and Castlebay and have for 20 years.

Copies are available -- but only to "family", singers who were there. And just for the cost of tape and postage -- negative profit on this end, if you want to think of it like that.
