Besides, just because you have lots of trees about doesn't necessarily mean you have lots of firewood... first you have to cut the trees down, then you have to cut them into pieces small enough to carry, then you have to let the wood season...

If the poor man didn't have an axe, all of that would be rather diffecult. Would be much more practical to just gather up the loose bits.
