I can tell you about my personal experience: I lived on a mini farm about 20 years ago. I milked goats and sold the milk. One of my best customers came up to the barn one day complaining about the girl his son was going to marry. He looked at me and sighed, and said that he wished his son was marrying me! He said "you're strong, healthy, not afraid to work, and you're smart. It's better than being pretty."

I was dumbfounded and uttered no more than a small laugh. Had I been complimented or told that I was ugly? I'll never forget it.
