I've been in Yates's Wine Lodge in Blackpool, abtout welve or thirteen years ago; it was like a disco inside - loud music, flashing lights, and full of kids. I didn't stay! I remember YWL in Walsall (home town) and Birmingham around 1970: very spartan, very Edwardian-looking (as distinct from the 80's "Vicwardian"), The Birmingham one had a long straight bar-room, which I seem to remember was about the length of a swimming pool. It had crash-barrier-like things to lean on (lots of customers, not many seats!), like the ones they used to have on soccer terraces, only brass.
