okay, I took the advice here and went and had it 'seen' to. It's now in a very nice little finger-cosy,and yes I was advised I would have had problems if I had left it, so thank you, everyone.It hurts like hell and being my right hand, I can't avoid using it but I 'spect it will be fine. Have to go back on Monday to have it checked but they have told me it will leave quite a 'dip' when it heals....looks like I won't be practising for a while |:)
