I used to be a delivery suite midwife, and saw plenty of the human side of these type of tragic events. I was the guy who would speak to grandparents (such as your good selves) over the phone, and (with the permission from the parents) deliver the devastating line which begins "I regret to inform you...."

It hurts everyone really bad, parents and grandparents alike. Over time you hurt less and less, but you never forget. I am sorry for your loss, please accept my condolences...
