Goober Peas! Yes, Kat, they are peanuts and that song is sung at a lot of reenactments. Goobers are still popular here in the sunny South. According to the book, "Singing Soldiers, A History Of The Civil War In Song" compiled by Paul Glass, the song was written by P. Pintar, Esq., music by P. Nutt, Esq. (I just copy it like it says, I didn't make that one up!)

Part of his commentary says; "One way of passing the time, when not on the march or at drill, was to get together around the campfire and enjoy some informal singing. This delightful Confederate song has a spontaneity and simplicity with that spirit of songmaking and rhyme that lets the mind forget the orders, the dust, and the blistering feet.

Mistaken for Pete Seeger! What an honor and a privilige that would be! Would but that I could play like him so that mistake were possible! Folks have refered to my banjo as a deadly weapon, so yes, I could well be there.
