I've just begun re-reading this book and new things leap out at me, in fact as early as in the preface.

Miller says:

"Throughout the presidential race, Bush ran hard as the un-Clinton; and while we can't say it won him the election, it was surely key to what success he had. His base supporters were intoxicated- stupefied- by his sly daily hints that he was Clinton's total opposite. They fell completely for his ritual promise to "restore honor and dignity to the White House", notwithstanding his own highly questionable past. That Bush may, in his personal life had some wilder times by far than Clinton ever did, or that Bush's public ethics were immeasureably worse than Clinton's (the former having made out like a bandit as the governor of Texas, while Governor Clinton didn't make a dime beyond his salary), were thoughts that Bush's followers couldn't take in, so fully propagandized had they been."

So. Perhaps it's not that Bush's apologists love Bush, it's that they hate Clinton!

For anyone who is interested, this is a very good, if upsetting read. I got my copy through Dick Greenhaus at Camsco.
