I don't see any problem with judicial slavery, provided that the judicial system actually works. If you commit a crime, it's both a more effective deterrent and better economic policy for you to work for your keep. If I'm wrongfully convicted, I'm not going to care that much whether I'm making license plates or counting ceiling tiles.
