I have never worked out what it was doing there, but once when driving through New Brunswick, on your average road, we came upon a sizeable official sign which had, in black and white: ROAD. There were no access roads nearby, nothing. No shift from dirt to asphalt. Just a sort of existential label. We stopped and looked around, as if there was going to be, oh I don't know, clouds in the sky saying SKY. Really weird. Changed my whole way of thinking about signs. Why not: CITY. In case you were driving in from the country, and so on. Life is complicated: why not simple identification signs, just to reassure you. Yours, Peter T.
