There's little evidece that Patrick ever existed at all. Primary proof of his "existence" is derrived from his autobiography which was "discovered" hundreds of years after his time. Little, if anything can be pulled out of contemporary reports. Add to that the Church's penchant for writing the histories of saints (many of which likely never existed either) and you have a wonderful legend that has little basis in fact.
