I missed the first part of the Krulwich interview but what I got was that “A New Kind of Science” proposes that only a small number of simple rules are needed to randomly generate the entire universe as we know it. I don't know whether Wolfram's thesis is accepted in academic circles—he seems to have violated the first of Park's seven indicators at a minimum—but the notion isn't much stranger than what is canonical.
