Llanfair, we have a heat pump, which is a system for either heating or cooling. It works well. And even for us here in Vancouver Washington (a three hour drive south of Seattle) it has gotten plenty hot. The Pacific northwest gets lots of moisture, which accounts for our lush surroundings. But I'll tell you, as welcome as the warm weather is, we would be complaining had we no air conditioning. (Fickle, aren't we?)
