I think I would like to ask Dylan what motivated him to become the first - and easily the best - proponent of a new genre of song - the psychological song. In songs like Ballad of a Thin Man and It's Alright Ma, he took on the themes of serious novelists. I have always thought that these painstaking descriptions of people's inner life are his greatest achievement. They often mistaken for songs of angst riden self obseession - and imitated horribly.
