The question of what someone in England either now or in the 1940s would call being pregnant depends on a buncha stuff.

What class are the people speaking? BIG difference in phrasing. An upper-class type might have said jokingly that she was preggers, though that's a vulgarity; she'd never have referred to a bun in the oven unless she were deliberately mocking working-class usage.
