Re. Tam Lin. The DT text is indeed a transcription from the Fairport Convention record, though it contains some mistakes. It isn't a traditional text, but a modern, very condensed, and extensively anglicised, re-write of Child 39A: which was originally printed in James Johnson's Scots Musical Museum, vol. V, 1796, no. 411 pp. 423-5; "communicated by Robert Burns". The tune used is not the one given in SMM; I don't know where they got it, but I think it was extensively altered from its traditional form, whatever that might have been. The chances are that it doesn't belong traditionally to this ballad at all; certainly there is no obvious resemblance to any of the examples in Bronson or the few others found more recently.

The tune with the DT file is the one to which Bert Lloyd sang the song; Frankie Armstrong and others got it from him. It's a mystery why it's been attached to a text very different from Lloyd's (which was also a modern re-write). Mind you, it's also a mystery where Lloyd's tune came from, though it does sound familiar from somewhere or other. Perhaps he took it from another song and forgot to say. The other DT file, incidentally, (TAMLIN) is an even more bogus collation (from a textual point of view) though the tune with it may be based on a genuine traditional one. Too tired just now to try to disentangle it.
