The above lyrics are still missing a line in the middle of the last verse. I found it at http://www.vex.net/~paulmac/carpenter/lyrics/goofus.html. Also, nobody has posted the songwriters' names:

GOOFUS
(Wayne King, William Harold & Gus Kahn)
...
Got a job but I just couldn't keep it long.
The leader said that I played all the music wrong.
So I stepped out with an outfit of my own.
Got together a new kind of ochestree,
And we all played just the same "Goofus" harmony,
And I must admit, we made a hit.
"Goofus" has been lucky for me.

[Wayne King was probably the first to record it, but it has also been recorded by Chet Atkins, The Carpenters, Tommy Dorsey, Duane Eddy, Phil Harris, The Hoosier Hot Shots, Slim Lamar & His Southerners, Guy Lombardo, Johnny Mercer, and Les Paul.]
