Steve ...retiring under such conditions means that you can walk away with no regrets.

The powers that be may be screwing up other peoples lives but they are never again going to be able to do it to you.

I speak from exprience having taken early retirement on ill health grounds 5 years ago.

Now I spend my time doing all the things I really enjoy but never had time to do when I was working.

I'm financially poor but emotionally rich and that's a pretty good position to be in.
