Palmer comments: "In December 1758 Goree [West Africa] was seized from the French. Captain Matthew Barton (?1715-95) and some 220 survivors of his crew of 350 were ransomed by the British Government, and arrived at Gibralter in June 1760. The ballad... probably appeared soon afterwards."

No tune is indicated. The song doesn't seem to have been found in tradition.
