I sat beside the Mohican River
Beneath the shade of the covered bridge,
There watched the deepening flames of autumn,
Burned there on that towering ridge.

I heard the cooling water running,
Among the rocks upon its flow,
There reveled in the silent secrets,
That only hills and rivers know.

I stood beside the trees of autumn
I stood there in the sun and rain
Then looked out on the hills of Ohio,
And never looked at life the same...
