I need more info than the OED provides to understand what *this group* means by an "air," as opposed to a song or ballad or isntrumental piece or whatever else -- and I suspect the MMario (a pretty knowledgable fellow) does as well.

I know that an "air" means a tune or melody, but it seems that a more limited and more precise meaning is being used here.
