Number 518 in the Roud Folk Song Index, where quite a lot of examples are listed; mostly from England, though it has also been found in Scotland, the USA and Australia. It was widely published on broadsides; a number of examples can be seen at  Bodleian Library Broadside Ballads:

The rambling sailor  and  The rambling soldier

The DT set was presumably taken from a Lou Killen record, and contains the comical mis-hearing "hardwood" for "hard word". I probably wouldn't call the Carthy and Lloyd sets separate "versions" (in the traditional sense) as they appear to be two recordings of the same single variant. I rather think that Martin learned the song from Bert.
