The lyrics seem to have been written by a man who knew he was dying (Peadar Kearney died in 1942). He had fought in the Rising of 1916, he had written Ireland's National Anthem and still his country, as he saw it - not the unionists, was still not independent. So, for me, the lyrics are sad and literally pathetic: pathos, not bathos.
