This is only partially correct. If you go to an advertiser's site, then Google does use referrer links -- it's how they get paid when users click on the link. It's very common, and is mostly irrelevant to the end user because if the site you are going to wants to, it can easily collect the name of the web page you were last visiting anyway.

As web tracking and privacy issues go, this is hardly worth mentioning. There are plenty of serious issues to worry about.

If it annoys you, however, you can always use a tool like WebWasher that can strip referrers from urls.
