Most of the people I have really loved have been "on spec". They include Heron (with Gerald Moore), Robin Williamson, Dick Gaughan, Downes and Beer, Johnny Coppin, Bill Boazman, Allan Taylor, Wild Oats, Jonny Collins and dozens more. Being able to cope with some disappointments is part of process of finding stuff you like.
