Thread Name: Lyr Add: Polly Garter's Song
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Polly Garter's Song
Gareth's link above does not appear to work any more.
The lyrics for Polly Garter's song (I Loved A Man) are widely available on the web (I have found them on English, German, Italian and Polish language sites), but a tune to go with them seems impossible to come by. Most of the recordings seem to be long out of print:
- the original New York production with Dylan Thomas and 4 actors
- the 1953 BBC Third Programme recording
- a 1965 recording by Australian Tina Date on her only album A Single Girl
- There was a BBC televison production (in the 60s?)
- There was film version with Richard Burton & Elizabeth Taylor in the 1970s
There also seems to be a tradition of writing new tunes for each production! But I can't find any of these on the net:
- Elton John wrote the score for a 1988 CD, on which Polly is played by Bonnie Tyler, and the First Voice is Anthony Hopkins.
- Under Milk Wood Songs by Stephen Goss (lecturer in composition at the University of Surrey) were performed by Goss and his wife Jenevora Williams at a 2001 concert
- Haddon S Kime also wrote the song tunes for a 2002 stage production in Boston
- Charles Corn composed and played the music for a production by the Lower School of Westminster School.
Does anyone know where I can get hold of a recording, or the dots, or an ABC or any other rendition of any of the tunes that have been used for this song?
Or will I have to follow the tradition, and write my own tune? Perhaps I'll just wait to tape Radio 4's new production in November.
