Hey Gang!

I am looking for the lyrics to a tune that I believe is called "Dance to your Shadow".

the lyric line I know is something like: "Dance to your shadow and it's good to be livin"

I have heard a version where there is a second song mixed in... with a bunch of "Ho Rows" in the vocal line..

very confused, any info would help me greatly!

All the Best fae

Dance To Your Shadow (Bandó Ribinnean)

Ho ro haradal, "Hind ye" haradal "Hind ye" han dan.
Ho ro haradal, "Hind ye" haradal "Hind ye" han dan.

Bandó ribinnean a shioda's de ribinnean
Bandó ribinnean á ruidealadh mu'd cheann-sa.
Bandó ribinnean a shioda's de ribinnean
Bandó ribinnean á ruidealadh mu'd cheann-sa.

Dance to your shadow when it's good to be living, lad
Dance to your shadow when there's nothing better near you.
Dance to your shadow when it's fine to be living, lad
Dance to your shadow when there's nothing better near you.

Dance to your shadow when it's hard to be living, lad
Dance to your shadow when there's nothing better near you.
Dance to your shadow when it's sore to be living, lad
Dance to your shadow when there's nothing better near you.

Dance to your shadow and let fate to her fiddle, lad
Dance to your shadow when there's nothing better near you.
Dance to your shadow for it's fine to be living, lad
Dance to your shadow when there's nothing better near you.

The English lyrics were written by Kenneth MacLeod; the Gaelic and melody came from Marion MacLeod of Eigg. ("Ho Ro" etc. is pretty well untranslateable.) Published in "Songs of the Hebrides" volume 3, 1921. Marjory Kennedy-Fraser & Kenneth MacLeod. (Boosey & Hawkes, London). Accents as given in the sheet-music.

I think the two were coupled on Dolores Keane & John Faulkner's album "Broken-Hearted I'll Wander". If I can find it I'll try to transcribe the lyric for you.

Hin, hin, ha-ra-da-la
Hin, hin, ha-ra-da-la
Hin, ho ha-ra-da-la
Hin, ha-ra-dal o ro
Hin, hin, ha-ra-da-la
Hin, hin, ha-ra-da-la
Hin, ho ha-ra-da-la
Hin, ha-ra-dal o ro

There are tunes in the River Otter
Pools in the river water
Pools in the river and the river calls him.

Published by Boosey & Hawkes, 1921 as "The River Calling"; I haven't seen that edition, so I don't know who wrote the English words. It turns up again in the 1923 edition of "Songs of the Hebrides" (vol. 3) as "The Hazel by the River", with a quite different English text (uncredited, so perhaps by Marjory Kennedy-Fraser). The Gaelic text (of which neither English version is a translation) is as follows:

Theid mi null air an abhuinn
Thig mi nall air an abhuinn
Choimheadair an taillear.

Tha na maoir ga ma shireadh
Tha na saoir ga mo shireadh
Tha na maoir ga mo shireadh
Chagabh mi ach taillear.

Described as "An ancient Skye mouth-tune from Keith MacDonald's Puirt-a-Beul".

I've done a rough translation of the Gaelic words:

Bandó ribinnean a shioda's de ribinnean
[bands of silken ribbons]
Bandó ribinnean á ruidealadh mu'd cheann-sa.
[bands of ribbons woven about my head]
[McLaren dictionary trans. of 'ruideal' - a riddle, a coarse sieve; in English 'to riddle' can mean to sift or to poke holes in]

Theid mi null air an abhuinn
Thig mi nall air an abhuinn
Choimheadair an taillear.

I'll go across the river
I'll come across the river
To see the tailor
[? I would translate it as 'the tailor is beeing watched', but in context "to see the tailor" is better]

Tha na maoir ga ma shireadh
[The steward is pursuing me] ...

Cha gabh mi ach taillear.
[I'll have none but the tailor]
['Cha gabh' is two words.]

I was hearing "Hen, hen, halibut a hen, hen halibut a hen, hen halibut a hen, halibut a roe. There are chills in the river otter pools in the rive water pools in the river in the river called Siene."
It's amazing how the brain fills in the gaps based on cultural references...

Subway to Sally - Horo

Ho ro haradal ho ro haradal
Ho ro haradal hind ye han dan
Ho ro haradal ho ro haradal
Ho ro haradal hind ye han dan

Dance to your shadow when it's good to be living lad
Dance to your shadow when there's nothing better near
Dance to your shadow when it's good to be living lad
Dance to your shadow when there's nothing better near

Hind hind haradal hind hind haradal
Hind hind haradal hind haradal ho
Hind hind haradal hind hind haradal
Hind hind haradal hind haradal ho

There are chills in the river otter
Pools in the river water
Pools in the river
And the river calls him

Hind hind haradal hind hind haradal
Hind hind haradal hind haradal ho
Hind hind haradal hind hind haradal
Hind hind haradal hind haradal ho

Ho ro haradal ho ro haradal
Ho ro haradal hind ye han dan
Ho ro haradal ho ro haradal
Ho ro haradal hind ye han dan

Dance to your shadow when it's good to be living lad
Dance to your shadow when there's nothing better near
Dance to your shadow when it's good to be living lad
Dance to your shadow when there's nothing better near

Ho ro haradal ho ro haradal
Ho ro haradal hind ye han dan
Ho ro haradal ho ro haradal
Ho ro haradal hind ye han dan
