Subject: Lyr req: Annan Water From: Date: 11 Dec 98 - 06:34 PM That thread on Nic Jones reminded me of a song I've wanted the words to for years - I have the record but not the sleeve - it was on 'Songs & Ballads' - I managed to write out most of it but have lots of gaps. 'Woe betide you Annan water/At night you are a gloomy river/Over you I'll build a bridge... etc. |
Subject: Lyr Add: ANNAN WATER From: Murray on Saltspring Date: 12 Dec 98 - 03:41 AM From Sir Walter Scott's "Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border";
1. "Annan water's wading deep,
2. "Gar saddle me the bonny black,
3. He has loupen on the bonny black,
4. He has loupen on the bonny grey,
5. O he has ridden o'er field and fell,
6. "Now, bonny grey, now play your part!
7. The grey was a mare, and a right good mare;
8. "O boatman, boatman, put off your boat!
9. "O I was sworn sae late yestreen,
10. The side was stey, and the bottom deep,
11. O he has pou'd aff his dapperpy coat,
12. He has ta'en the ford at that stream tail;
13. O wae betide the frush saugh wand!
14. "And wae betide ye, Annan Water,
This is given by Child in an appendix to his no. 215, "Rare Willie Drowned in Yarrow.” I like Scott's verses; they have for me the real common touch, and the direness of the tragic ballad. |

Subject: Lyr Add: ANNAN WATER (trad, as sung by Nic Jones) From: Smeebes Date: 27 Jan 99 - 02:44 PM ANNAN WATER
Oh Annan Water's wondrous deep, and my love Annie is wondrous bonny
And woe betide you Annan water, at night you are a gloomy river,
And he has ridden o'er field and fell, o'er moor and moss and many a mire
And woe betide you Annan water, at night you are a gloomy river,
Oh, boatman come, put-off your boat; put-off your boat for gold and money,
And woe betide you Annan water, at night you are a gloomy river,
And he has tried to swim that stream, and he swam on both strong and steady
And woe betide you Annan water, at night you are a gloomy river,
