Could someone post the lyrics to 'Ta Mo Chleamhnas Deanta' from the Chieftains CD 'Irish Heartbeat'. I'm pretty sure I copied 'em down wrong and I can't seem to get my friend to remember to bring her CD over again. Thanks.

Hi Maelgwyn, how've you been? I am using the slash to represent the fada as I canna type them on my keyboard.

TÁ MO CHLEAMHNAS DÉANTA
(My Match Is Made)

Tá mo chleamnhas déanta ó athrú aréir
S'ní mónágo dtaithníonn an bhean liom féin
ach fágfaidh mé i mo dhiaidh i
'gus imeoidh mé liom féin
ar fud na geoillte craobhach.

My match it was made here last night
to a girl I neither love nor like
but I'll take my own advice
and leave her behind
and go roaming the wild woods over.

Shiúl mise thoir agus shiúl mise thiar
Shiúl mise Corcaigh 'gus sráide Bh'Táth Cliath
ach sámháil de mo chailín deas ni fhaca mise riamh.
'Si an bhean dubh a dhfhág mo chroi cráite.

I walked up and I walked down.
I walked to Cork, and Dublin and Belfast towns,
but no equal to my true love could I find,
She's the wee lass that's left my heart broken.

D'éirigh mé ar maidin dhá uair roimh an lá
'gus fuair mé litir ó mo mhile ghrá.
Chuala mé an smóilín 's an loadubh á rá
gur ealiagh mo ghrá thar sáile.

I got up two hours before day
and I got a letter from my true love.
I heard the blackbird and the linnet say
that my love had crossed the ocean.

Mick

Slashes converted to fadas. --JoeClone, 10-Jul-02.

corrections to above:
verse 1 'geoillte' should be gcoillte (woodlands), verse 2 (Irish)"Bh'Ta/th Cliath" should be "Baile Átha Cliath" (another name for Dublin), verse 3 "loadubh" should be "londubh" (blackbird). See similar lyrics at Tá mo chleamhnas a dhéanamh

I had the following saved in my wp; it's not much different except for an extra verse (#3) and that only the Irish verses are sung. The song can be sung to at least two airs, the one used by Altan and Chieftains and the other one recorded by na Casadaigh and published in Ó Baoill. Ceólta Gael.

TÁ MO CHLEAMHNAS DÉANTA

Tá mo chleamhnas déanta ó arú aréir.
'Gus ní mó ná go dtaitníonn an bhean údaí liom féin;
Ach fágfa mé 'mo dhiadh í 'gus racha' mé leat féin
Amach 'fud na gcoillte craobhach.

ó shiúil mise thoir agus shiúil mise thiar,
Agus shiúil mise Corcaigh 'gus sráideanna Bhaile 'Cliath;
Macasamhail mo chailín deas ní fhaca mise riamh,
Sí 'n bhean dubh d'fhág mo chroí cráite.

Is fada 'tá mo tharraingt ins a' bhaile seo le bliain
'Gus ní mar gheall ar Mhuire agus ní mar gheall ar Dhia.
Ach a' dúil go bhfaighinn í bláth na n-úll
'Sí 'n bhean dubh í dtug mo chroí grá di.

ó d'eirigh mé ar maidín dhá uair roimh an lá,
Agus fuair mise litir ó mo mhíle grá
Chuala mé an smólach 's a' lon dubh a' rá
Gur éalaigh mo ghrá thar sáile.

A match was made here last night to a girl I neither love nor like
But I'll take my own advice and I'll leave her behind and I'll roam the wide world over. [literally, I'll roam through the forests]

I walked up and I walked down
I walked Cork, Dublin and Belfast town
But no likeness of my true love did I find
She's the wee lass who left my heart broken.

I've been a long year in this town, and it's not for Mary or for God,
but in hopes that I would win the apple blossom, the dark (haired) maid who's won my heart.

I woke up two hours before day and I got a letter from my true love
And I heard the thrush and the blackbird say that my love has crossed the ocean.

a Choilm,
An gciallaíonn tú go bhfuil an dá theanga measgtha sna rainn céanna? Bhiodh suim ar leith ag Annraoi Ó Preith, atá ag déanamh taighde ar mhacarónachas, san leagan ud.
Sna leaganacha ag na Chieftains agus ag Altan agus atá i gcló sa leabhar ag Diarmuid Ó Muirithe, cantair rann i mBearla (aistriúchan) i ndiaidh rainn i nGaeilge.

Colm says there's a version in which Irish and English are mixed together and I want to check whether he means the two languages are mixed together in the same verse, rather than in alternating verses as in th Chieftains, Altan and Ó Muirithe (published) versions.
