Subject: Tune Add: THE DAY THE PUB BURNED DOWN From: Disgusted in Brisbane Date: 02 Aug 99 - 10:12 PM Mr Greehaus/Susan of DT - I must protest in the strongest possible way. While I have the greatest respect for our brethren from across the Tasman Sea this song certainly does not qualify to be tagged in the DT as @australia - @australasia (Australia and New Zealand) if you really insist. As for the reference to 'a sort of Aussie Old Dun Cow' this song isn't an Aussie anything! You could be forgiven perhaps for listening to rumours that Kiwis are rapidly acquiring major Australian business icons, (in particular two out of the three major brewers) but I can assure you that Wapakiwi is not a gazetted place name in this country (nor New Zealand for that matter).
But here's the tune:

Subject: RE: Tune Add: The Day the Pub Burned Down From: GUEST,Wayne D Smith Date: 23 Apr 12 - 03:33 AM I to must I must protest in the strongest possible way. As I am the grandson of the now deceased composer, Bob (R G Edwards) I now hold the copyrights to his material so who the hell John J Leahy is I have no idea. I certainly hope he isn't collecting any royalties for this song "the Day the Pub Burnt Down" Wayne Smith, Tauranga, NZ |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: The Day the Pub Burned Down From: Little Robyn Date: 23 Apr 12 - 05:24 AM It may have a copyright date of 1999 but we were singing it back in the 1960s!! Robyn |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: The Day the Pub Burned Down From: Rob Naylor Date: 23 Apr 12 - 05:31 AM The copyright date's for the sequencing by John Leahy, NOT for the song itself. Not sure whether sequencing "arrangements" fall under the same category as other types of musical arrangement, but I'd be very surprised if just sequencing the song has given Mr Leahy any rights to royalties. He's not claiming to have written it, just to have sequenced it, in the same way as people posting tabs in places like "Ultimate Guitar" name themselves as authors of the tabs. |

Subject: RE: Tune Add: The Day the Pub Burned Down From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker Date: 10 Jan 16 - 01:53 AM what is wrong with this world and all this legalistic petty mean minded £££$$ grasping squabbles over art... I entered this thread thinking I'd be finding the lyrics to a song that might offer comfort and greater understanding... My favourite pub actually did burn down a few years ago.. it was a great music venue and centre for a musicians community... my life has been empty, despairing, and inconsolable ever since and I have yet to find the strength to leave the house and venture outside again..... 😭 |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE DAY THE PUB BURNED DOWN From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 10 Jan 16 - 04:19 AM here 'tis THE DAY THE PUB BURNED DOWN from the Digital Tradition One of my friends sings it & it;s a great song. THE DAY THE PUB BURNED DOWN Pull up a stump and lend an ear, a story I'll relate About a shameful waste of beer, I will elucidate I'll tell of how calamity struck Wopa Kiwi town And caused a dreadful tragedy the day the pub burned down The boys were gathered in the bar upon that fateful day The Maori and the Pakeha from near and far away While listening to Manuka Jones, New Zealand's finest liar We heard a cry that chilled the bones, "The flamin' pub's afire" There'd been a drought for weeks and weeks, the wells and tanks were dry No water flowed along the creeks, we've got no town supply The blazing sun without relent turned all the green to brown Imagine our predicament the day the pub burned down Through smoke and flames we dragged the booze to safety through the door We thought of what we stood to lose and rushed back in for more Standby, the fire brigade is here; those men of high renown Oh fireman, fireman save the beer and let the pub burn down They bashed the tops of barrels in, while strong men knelt to pray They shoved their flippin' hoses in and shouted, "Pumps away" They fought with beer and lemonade to try and save the town We fought and cursed the fire brigade the day the pub burned down The moreporks haunt the old pub site in Wopa Kiwi town Where madmen roam the land by night and hunt the firemen down They curse the cash they cannot spend, their raging thirst to drown Dry horrors drove them 'round the bend, the day the pub burned down A sort of Kiwi Old Dun Cow @NewZealand @drink @fire filename[ DAYPBBRN DP oct97 |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: The Day the Pub Burned Down From: Mr Red Date: 10 Jan 16 - 06:00 AM I usually preface this song with: shikkers - drunkards (because that is how I learned it in NZ) NOT madmen! Pakeha - European/non Moari - not that I sang those two lines Manuka - a tree of the Tea Tree family with similar properties Morepork - an NZ owl. Strangely Oz call their variety Mopork, which might have added to the confusion over nationalistic provenance. There are other differences that feel better to me, but are definitely part of the Folk Process. The Slim Dusty song "Pub with no Beer" probably gets conflated in the myth with it too. from New Zealand Folk Song G D Pull up a stump and lend an ear, a story I'll relate: G About a sinful waste of beer I will elucidate. C I'll tell of how calamity struck Wapakiwi town G D G And caused a gruesome tragedy, the day the Pub burned down. The boys had gathered in the bar upon that fateful day. By horse and foot and motor-car they all had made their way. While listening to Manuka Jones, New Zealand's finest liar, We heard a cry that chilled the bones: "The flamin' Pub's on fire!" There'd been a drought for weeks and weeks: the wells and tanks were dry. No water flowed along the creeks, we had no town-supply. The blazing sun, without relent, turned all the green to brown - Imagine our predicament, the day the Pub burned down. Through smoke and flame we dragged the booze to safety out the door, Then thought of what we stood to lose, and rushed back in for more! "Stand by - the Fire Brigade is here!" (those men of high renown): "Oh, fireman, fireman, save the beer and let the Pub burn down!" They stoved the tops of barrels in while strong men knelt to pray, Shoved their flippin' hoses in and shouted "Pumps away!" They fought with beer and lemonade, that raging fire to drown: We fought and cursed the Fire Brigade, the day the Pub burned down. Now moreporks haunt the old pub-site 'round Wapakiwi town, And 'shikkers' roam the hills at night to hunt the firemen down. They curse the cash they cannot spend, their raging thirst to drown: Dry horrors drove them 'round the bend, the day the Pub burned down. |

Subject: RE: Tune Add: The Day the Pub Burned Down From: Richard Mellish Date: 05 May 16 - 05:04 AM I've just tried to play the midi, without success, then tried to convert the abc and found previously accessible converters no longer available. Finally I've used this, which has given me a PDF of conventional music notation but also caused the tune now to reside on that site posted by me, which was not my intention. |
