SPANISH CIVIL WAR SONGS Who sings what?

The aim of this MUDCAT thread is to compile a list of the names of people who currently perform Spanish Civil War Songs in any language.

2011 will be the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. The performance of songs associated with the war will therefore have an added significance during the coming year. Each time a Spanish Civil War song is performed it will be a small commemoration of those who volunteered to defend the democracy of the Spanish Republic back in the 1930's.
It is hoped that this list of performers will encourage people to request the singing of these songs. It might also encourage the booking of the performers.
This is a perma thread which will mean that as information is posted I shall try to organise the thread so that it is easy to use. Below, in this initial post, there is an alphabetical TITLE LIST. Each song title in this list will also act as a clickable link leading to an alphabetical PERFORMER LIST for that particular song. This will be a list of the people who currently perform the song.
The PERFORMER LIST will also include the following basic personal and geographical information about the performer:

  • NAME (and Mudcat name if possible)
  • LOCATION a) Country and b)Town (or City or Region).
If the performer is a Mudcat member it would be helpful if their Mudcat name is included since this would enable other Mudcat members to make contact with them via Mudcat's Personal Messaging system. However there are some privacy issues involved with this and therefore the bracketing of a Mudcat name alongside a real name will only be included if the Mudcat member submits this information themselves. For the sake of your internet security it is also unwise to include very detailed contact information like ordinary email, phone or full postal address (unless you are desperate for a penis extension or a million dollars from a Nigerian bank).
I have begun the lists using songs about which I already have some limited information but would appreciate it if gaps are filled and corrections are pointed out. Please post information about yourself or other performers who sing these songs and I would be grateful if you post the essential information in the style and format which I have used in the lists below because I will then be able to cut and paste rather than retype. The essential information will be harvested from the submitted posts and included in the two lists here at the top of the thread But, please feel free to post other interesting information, comment or chat. I shall leave all the contributing posts in place, un-edited unless they are disruptive or offensive.

What's the meaning of the question mark attached to Tom Lehrer in the performer list for Folk Song Army?

I don't think Yellow Roses qualifies as a Spanish Civil War song; it was written in the early 1960s by Trevor Peacock & popularised by Adam Faith. The context of the Spanish Civil War has been attached to it retrospectively, but I'm not aware that it was written with that in mind.

Yes you are probably right Pip Radish. I have spent a lot of time trying to establish the provenance of the song over on this thread HERE I am hoping for a reply from Trevor Peacock's agent on this. If you are able to add anything conclusive to what we have already established that would be good.

An Irish Rugby team I've met (5yrs ago? in a bar in downtown Austin) sings the 1 with the refrain "Venga jaleo, jaleo (something something) y Franco, se va paseo, y Franco se va paseo". They sing it loud, in Spanish, with no slowdowns needed for forgotten words/phrases. But I don't think they recorded it... Tw

I do Jamie Foyers as well with the addition of a refrain at the end to the tune of Over The Hills and Far Away with the lines 'Oer the hills and far away, through Gibralter France and Spain, Our cause commands and we obey, Over the hills and Far Away' and by the way it's Jim McDonald (not Mac), Sheffield, England

Nice work Geoff.

I just sent you an email with details of a CD being produced by Blantyre Trade Unionists of 8 SCW songs.

By the way the Scottish Parliamenet has just acknowledged the 4 brothers from Scotland who fought and one died in Spain.
Private Ryan type story , ripe for a song!

Next year's Memorial event can't be held in London as the Gardens are being redone so it may be more widely spread. That would be a good place to sing songs by local singers.

Also if people want to mount the Antifascistas exhibition from IBMT in their local area it is nice to support it with talks, songs, poems film, drama etc etc. Anyone feel free PM me for contacts, my sisters are on the Committee

Also is your Clem Beckett song the one written by SUE HAITHWAITE called Just another DirtTrack or the one I wrote with the 'Ride on Clem Beckett' chorus?

I am surprised not to find two classic Spanish Civil War Songs on your list: Venga Jaleo! and Los Cuatro Generales (famously recorded by Paul Robeson). Venga Jaleo!, f I remember, was derived from an old Andalusian folk song called "Anda Jaleo," collected by Federico Garcia Lorca.

Hi Jackie, yes I am also surprised that nobody has posted saying that they sing those two very well known songs. I started the list by using titles and current singers from another SCW thread on Mudcat which can be reached here SONGS IN ENGLISH ABOUT THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR. This why most of the songs above are recently written songs in English. The many famous Spanish and German songs are still sung by some choirs but I think they may not be sung as often as they once were by individual singers? I have heard The Peat Bog Soldiers sung in clubs but nobody has posted as a singer of that song either and it was once strongly associated with the SCW even though it was not about that war. I typed in a few non-English titles above just so that people would appreciate that the foreign language songs were also to be included but there are a great many more of them and there seemed no point in typing them all out before singers post to say that they do actually perform them.

Anyway thanks for your post which has put the thread back the "live" section again.

The New York City Labor Chorus. of which I am a member, sings Spanish civil war songs: it sings "Si Me Quieres Escribir"on its CD entitled "Hats off to Labor." We sang that at the memorial for Moe Fishman in November 2008. It sang Spanish Civil War songs with the Cor Corchion in Wales in 2009.

In NYC, John Pietaro of The Flames of Discontent has a version of "Viva La Quince Brigade" on his new CD: "The Revenge of the Atom Spies" -- I heard his group perform it at the Brecht Forum in New York City recently.
The San Francisco Bay Area Labor Heritage Chorus sings a Spanish Civil War Medley: it is on a CD called "The Great Choral Convergence" recorded 2004 in Washington DC.
Si Kahn is a North Carolina based folk musician who has written a song about Clarence Kailin, a Lincoln Brigade volunteer, that I heard him sing at the Tamiment Library in New York City
in 2009.

To: Mark Ross

Dear Mr. Ross,

My Dad, Ralph Jonas, was very involved in the art, literary and music scene in Chicago from the late 50's to the early 70's. The likes of Phil Ochs, Hugh Hefner, Bill Cosby and Bob Dylan were a common site with him and even in my house.

Eddie Belchowsky was a very important person to my Dad, his second wife Joan, me and my sister. Stories about how Eddie got his arm shot off in the Spanish Civil War and his other exploits are family lore.

Eddies' art is exquisite and I have many of his pieces including his hauntingly stunning (if not terrifying when you are a little girl!) self portrait. I am getting an appraisal today, as a matter of fact and wanted to do a search for Eddie and found you.

How do you know Eddie's work? I'd love to know if you have any of his peices or any other information about Eddie. For a little girl, he was a kick, I'll tell you that much!

I don't know how involved you were or are in the history of the art world in Chicago of that era, but the other artist that was heavily favored by my Dad was Julian Harr. He and Eddie were acquaintences through my Dad. I have 3 of Julian's sculpted pieces. Through his close friend Hugh Schwartzberg, I have a large (it has to be hung with studs through the chimney) Chinese War Horse whose artist signature cannot be discerned. It is made of latex and is 3 dimensional.   The circle of friends of my Dad with many, many, many others and Mr. Schwartzberg included Eddie and Julian among others.

Hi GUEST,Ruthee (JONAS) Goldkorn,
You probably already know all of the information but in case there is something there which you might find informative I am posting a link to the Mudcat thread Songs In English About The Spanish Civil War which has a section of information about Ed Balchowsky and some web links to videos HERE

Ruthee, I hope you're familiar with the Loafer's Glory radio program that Utah Phillips broadcast about ten years ago. The first 38 episodes are available for free download at http://www.thelongmemory.com/. Utah Phillips makes frequent mention of Eddie Belchowsky, and plays many recordings of Eddie's wonderful piano playing and singing.
I wish there were an index of the radio program. Right now, they're available only as single-file, one-hour programs, and they're not indexed at all. There are a lot of treasures amongst those programs, but you have to listen to the whole of each program to discover their treasures. I burned them all onto MP3 CDs, and play them on my car stereo.

Ewan McColl's version of "Jamie Foyers" (based on a much older song, incidentally)gets sung very regularly in sessions in Scotland, and has been recorded by many.
I was on a musical trip to Spain in 2009 and suggested we might sing it as being a link between Scotland and Spain, but was advised against by one of our Scottish members, who felt that sensitivities were still such, after all these years, that it might not be a good idea. This probably concurs with the view in the link posted by mikesamwild on 24th Nov last.

I don't see any mention of the song "Hans Beimler" in your list. I got it from Frank Harte after he sang it at a session in Forkhill a few years ago. I may be wrong but I think I have a recording somewhere of Pete Seeger singing it.

Just for sake of completeness, if we're not just considering recorded or professional artists, I also sing "Another Valley", Jamie Foyers and Jarama in sessions, and I'm fairly sure I've heard Tattie Bogle do Jamie Foyers on occasion too.

Andy

Thank you Andymac and Tattie Boggle, I could put you in the list above with just your Mudcat names but the main idea of the thread is to make people aware of the singers who can and will perform SCW songs in this 75th anniversary year( not just those who have recorded them) so I would prefer your actual name and where you are from if you are willing.

I have usually only listed the title of a SCW song if someone says they perform it because, with the great many SCW songs available,it would otherwise take a lot of time which might never produce any benefit. Here is a YouTube Video of the original Ernst Busch version in German
of Hans Beimler Does anyone else sing it?

Geoff,

One of my most moving memories was of the ceremony to commemorate the renovation and re-dedication of the statue of La Passionara on the Clyde a few years ago.

It was a beautiful cold and clear austere October day and I was privileged to be part of the audience listening to Jack Jones speak of the need to remain vigilant to the horrors of fascism and the pride and dignity of the last 3 remaining Scottish SCW veterans.

They've all sadly gone now but the memory of that day burns bright. If I ever get round to finishing it, there'll be another song commemorating that day and the SCW to add to your list soon.

Andy McInally

Andymac's mention of Frank Harte singing Hans Beimler reminds me of a late night session at the Inishowen Ballad Seminar some years ago when Frank sang Hans Beimler and was followed by Joe Mulherron singing his own excellent Civil War in Spain and yours truly with Valley of Jarama

This is a little bit off the main topic of this thread, I think, but significant nonetheless.

Tonight (Sat 26th Feb) at 20-00, BBC Radio 4's Archive on 4 series is broadcasting a programme called The Last of the International Brigaders.

The title probably says it all, but the programme blurb can be read at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00yw5tv

Sorry about the lateness of posting but anyone who can't listen to the live broadcast can find it on Listen Again for the next seven days.

Me, I've set the recorder because I'm off to an anti-fascist social with the rest of the Liverpool Socialist singers. Amongst others we'll be singing Woody Guthrie's All You Fascists Bound to Lose. Aren't they just!!

We sing Valley of Jarama and Viva La Quince Brigada (with rumbala chorus). We also sing Bandiera Rossa (avanti popolo), which I didn't realise was about the SCW as it's in Italian ...

Thank you GUEST,Red Notes Socialist Choir, I have put you in the performers list above.

Strictly speaking Bandiera Rossa (avanti popolo), is not a Spanish Civil War song because it predates the SCW and is not about the SCW. However,it is strongly associated with the SCW because it was sung as a marching song by the Garibaldi Brigade of Italian volunteers and it was one of the songs printed in The International Brigades Songbook, Canciones de las Brigadas Internacionales.
Here is a link to the Wikipedia entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandiera_Rossa

There is also a Mudcat thread about the song with lots of interesting links HERE

I have received the following information in emails from Annie Banham of the Clarion Choir:

Hello Geoff

Yes Birmingham clarion Singers have Viva La Quince Brigada in our repertoire. I have copied our conductor into this email, as she may have more information for you.

I should also mention that our founder, Dr Colin Bradsworth, brought our choir together following his experiences during the Spanish Civil War. The version of Viva La Quince Brigada we sing is the original spanish version from 1936, but with some variances in the lyrics.

Thanks Annie

In the latest edition of the Newsletter of the International Brigades Memorial Trust there is news of a new record on which Billy Bragg has recorded Jarama Valley. The Newsletter asks whether this is the first time that the British Batallion's memorial version has been recorded (as opposed to the frequently recorded Lincoln Batallion memorial version and the original ' soldiers' complaint' version written in 1937 by Alec McDade and recently recorded by Billy Stewart in Scotland.
It seems very unlikely that there is not an earlier recording of this common version of the song but I do not recall one. Did Arthur Johnstone who is listed above as singing it, also record it? And one of the many political choirs which perform the song has surely recorded it? Does anyone know for certain of a recording?

If anyone wants to buy the Billy Bragg recording which also has Maxine Peake reading the farewell address of La Passionaria to the International Brigades, the Cd can be ordered for £5 plus £1.90 p&p ( cheques payable to IBMT) from: IBMT 6 Stonells Road , London SW11 6HQ or pay by credit card or Paypal by ordering on the merchandise page on the IBMT website : http://www.international-brigades.org.uk/
