Subject: Wacky Brown From: GUEST,benjamir@yahoo.com Date: 05 Feb 01 - 07:17 PM The following is a song that my father used to sing, that I can not find in your pages. My problem is with the Susie's my verse, I think I have it wrong. Does anyone know this one? Atta Kootcha Catcha Kamma Tossa Marra Tossa Milka Samma Kamma Wacky Brown, fell into the well, fell into the well, fell into the deep dark well. Susie Jones milking in the barn saw him fall and ran and told her mother that Atta Kootcha Catcha Kamma Tossa Marra Tossa Milka Samma Kamma Wacky Brown, fell into the well, fell into the well, fell into the deep dark well. Susies Ma, makin' cracklin' bread, told old Joe that her Susie had said that Atta Kootcha Catcha Kamma Tossa Marra Tossa Milka Samma Kamma Wacky Brown, fell into the well, fell into the well, fell into the deep dark well. Then old Joe put his plow aside, grabbed his cain and hobbled into town to say that Atta Kootcha Catcha Kamma Tossa Marra Tossa Milka Samma Kamma Wacky Brown, fell into the well, fell into the well, fell into the deep dark well. To the well everybody came, what a shame, it took so long to say his name that Atta Kootcha Catcha Kamma Tossa Marra Tossa Milka Samma Kamma Wacky Brown, drown. I will try to get my daughter, who is better at such things, to work out the tune. Click for related thread |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Wacky Brown From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Feb 01 - 08:18 PM My younger sister used to sing this song. That being the case, it was far too uncool for me to sing, so I didn't learn it. I now have more respect for my sister and her songs, but I still don't know this one. I think it's posted in the forum as "Eddie" or "Eddy" Brown. If you put Edd in the filter and set the "age" to the maximum, I'll bet you'll find it. I tried, but I'm suffering from Internet sluggishness and can't get it to work. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Wacky Brown From: Owlkat Date: 06 Feb 01 - 02:51 AM Hi, I'd love to know the history of this song, since I've been singing it for the last thirty five years, and it's just one of "those" ageless camp songs. Cheers, Owl. |
Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: EDDIE BROWN (camp song) From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Feb 01 - 03:35 AM Well, on the self-titled Brothers Four album, it's called "Sama Kama Wacky Brown," and the songwriters named are Warren/Goehring - I believe the album came out in 1960. I got lyrics out of the songbook of Many Point Scout Reservation, published by Aminal Al Boyce, who has visited us a few times at Mudcat. No date on Al's songbook, unfortunately. I think it's probably a camp song, and the songwriters listed on the Brothers Four album just did an adaptation (but it could also be that all these versions are camp counselor adaptations of a copyrighted song). I made up a Google Search (click) that will take you to several versions. Oh, and of course there is a previous Mudcat thread (click) on this song. -Joe Offer- EDDIE BROWN

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Wacky Brown From: GUEST,Benjamir@yahoo.com Date: 07 Feb 01 - 08:28 AM Thank you very much. I will follow up the links. Yes, I would agree it as an old camp song, because my father got it as a camp counselor when younger. Thank you very much for the info and the links. I find the 'Eddie' to 'Atta' transfer very amusing. Thanks again. - Bob |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Wacky Brown From: GUEST,GEORGE GOEHRING Date: 05 Aug 07 - 06:08 PM Hello out there! I'm not sure who to write to so that everyone sees this. I'm George Goehring and wrote the music to "Sama Kama Wacky Brown" as well as the words, with Ed Warren. I got such a kick out of seeing all the correspondence on the song and all the curiosity about its origin. We wrote it in 1960 for The Brothers Four one afternoon in New York City so it was not an adaptation from an old camp song. It became a camp song after The Brothers Four recorded it -- much to our surprise!!! I also wrote "Lipstick On Your Collar" for Connie Francis, "Half Heaven - Half Heartache" for Gene Pitney & others. If you'd like to contact me, my email address is dandgtins@aol.com. Cheers! Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Wacky Brown From: GUEST,Cynthia Leib Date: 01 May 08 - 08:57 PM This song is included in Silver, Burdett & Ginn's World of Music, grade 4, copyright 1988, pg. 102. I found the book on the back shelf of a school where I was teaching music in 2005, and introduced it to kids from grades 3-6. They absolutely LOVED it! Even performed for a community fundraising event. According the the citation, it was copyrighted in 1959 by Joy Music Inc., with all rights controlled by Chappell & Co, Inc. Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Wacky Brown From: GUEST,Margaret Chang Date: 29 Aug 10 - 10:47 AM I study children's books about China. I think this song was the inspiration for what I believe to be a spurious Chinese folktale picture book, TIKKI TIKKI TEMBO, by Arlene Mosel, published in 1989. I've certainly never read the story of the boy with the long name who fell into the well in any collection of Chinese folklore (and I've read many!) but I remember the song from my college years. |
