I'm not sure about the string but the neck was made from a standard length wooden broom handle that he would buy from a hardware shop.

This crossbar bridges the washtub and allows the handle to be brought forward to a more convenient playing position. Allowing the handle to be used as a fingerboard. |

The "Bass Foodle" is not a toy , it has the same capabilities as a Bass Fiddle or electric bass. It's made from an inverted Metal Garbage can, an old Guitar neck (or you can whittle one out. has four strings, a sound board inside that the strings are anchored to. Four tuning keys and either with or without a bridge it has some real tone. The Bridge makes it easier to bow. My invention. Send your adress in a P.M and I'll send you detailed instructions on how to make one. The instructions are free. It's my invention and was originally a sculpture entitled, "Modern Jazz But I started playing it as a bass and I take it to Gigs with me. All you need is a drill for tools . Thus I deduce that a determined bass player can use pretty much anything for a sound box. I like the pictures on the link above, but a wash tub with a neck permanently afixed to it is going to be awkward to transport to gigs. I recently saw a portable wash tub bass used by a band here in Olympia, WA, USA (the Mud Bay jug band, to be precise.) The neck (a broom handle) has a medium sized coat hook bolted into it. The tub has a hole in the middle of the bottom. The string has a washer tied on one end and a loop on the other. To assemble, the looped end of the string goes through the hole in the bottom of the washtub (Did I mention that the washer has to be larger than the hole in the bottom!?) The loop in the string hooks over the coat hook on the neck. Put the tub on the floor, stand the neck up, and pull back until the string is tight - ready to plunk! |

My wash tub player, Herb, is 88 (he in is a Nursing Home and can no longer play with us) can actually play melodies on a washtub bass. He can also take in laundry when times are hard, but he won't do diapers! BTW, he uses a length of 1/4" whang/boot lacing for a string. It stretches for a couple weeks, then is fine for several months. He also wears a heavy leather glove on his plucking hand. |

The string looked more like a small guage wire cable, and he played it using a glove on his left hand. The glove was reenforced with what looked like steel bands on the fingers. It can be bowed or plucked, with the sound board anchor and the full length trash can (as opposed to a washtub.) it has real tone, Oh yes, there are two "F holes" cut into the sides of the inverted trash can. Furthermore, it doesn't take a superhuman ability to judge "string tension" to get a chromatic response , it only takes the same sort of training that one would need to play a bass fiddle. The Bass Foodle . Oh Hell, I'll figure out how to send scanned images in E-Mail and send a drawing or photograph to Dick greenhaus. Rick Fielding and "Anglo" Have my CD "Spanning the Decades" and Sunsul and Kat/Katlaughing will soon have the "New improved version. Several of the tracks were recorded with my recording equipment with which I did all the instruments and all the voices. I used the Bass Foodle on all of these, Maybe Rick will play one of them on his radio show. Let's see if I can learn how to do this bit of electronic legerdeemain and I'll get back to you. It is important to note that this is a very inexpensive solution. The kick bass drum that Dr. James uses was new once, but I'm pretty sure he got it used at a yard sale or Sally's (Salvation Army). I've seen him play many times and he is definitely one of the best. He now lives and plays around Ithaca, NY. Oh, incidentally, he calls his bass a "Low Dow Bass" not a gut-bucket bass or a wash tub bass. (And its not a toy---er maybe it is-but then all instruments are really toys. That's why people play with them!) Dave |

I'd hate to try to ply Mozart on a steel guitar. It isn't, however, hard to do on a guitar. As for which one to construct. I guess you have to ask yourself if you're going to make real music or just fool around. The above, of course, is not carved in stone (although I am a stonecutter) don't change your mind on just one persons "say so". |
