I'm very interested in this SONG, anyone know who wrote it, when, etc. (It's OK, I know the history behind it, the "crimson" flag" and all of that).

MMario, thanks so much, there's a lot there to digest. Can anyone decipher the third word in the second last line of the second verse? Looks like "cule"?

Good old Bodleian, eh.

Big Tim,
I make it out as "calls" - cal s, either a mis-prit or damaged copy. Calls makes sense and fits the internal rhyme.

Hope all went well with the flit, good to see you back,
love, john.

Thanks Dita, I believe you're right. Does this mean that all the songs in the Bodleian (Oxford Uni Library) are now on the web? If so can anyone tell this luddite how to access it.

D; the move went great, it's absolutely beautiful down here, also so peaceful and laid back. Almost as nice as Ireland!!!!!!!!

Tim

There are 30,000 broadsides indexed and searchable on the Bodleian site. Just follow this link, then bookmark it.

Cheers!
Ian

Ian, thanks a lot. Done that. Wow! What a resource!

Ard, got your pm, will contact you again tomorrow. Re the "Derry" tune I'm afraid I don't know "God Bless the Prince of Wales". I'm a Fenian too but I'm interested in all Irish culture. Cheers, slan.

Some years ago I was drinking in the Royal Enginerers Yacht Club in Upnor, Kent, UK ( No, don't ask why. its a story for Yachties only )

Amoungst the songs being sung was what was obviously of "other ranks" origin viz :- "I left my b*lls by Derrys walls", I regrt I was not sober enough, to take proper note without offending my hosts.

Basic theme was, "what were we doing here keeping Micks and Prods appart when we would prefer to be at home doing something else to our wife, girlfriend, sheep etc.

I get nothing out of squaddy songs, or bawdy ballards.

Any takers or sources ???

Prefer not to post this as a new thread.

Gareth

Copied from http://www.acronet.net/~robokopp/eire/derywall.htm

DERRY'S WALLS

The time has scarce gone by boys, two hundred years ago,
When Rebels on old Derry's Walls their faces dare not show;
When James and all his rebel band came up to Bishops Gate;
With heart and hand and sword and shield we caused them to retreat;

CHORUS: Then work and don't surrender but come when duty calls,
With heart and hand, and sword and shield, we'll guard old Derry's Walls.

The blood it did flow in the streams for many a winter's night,
They knew the Lord was on their side, to help them in the fight;
They only stood upon the walls determined for to fight,
To fight and gain the victory and hoist the Crimson high. CHORUS.

At last, at last with one broadside the heavens sent their maze,
The boom was broke that crosses Foyle's shores and James he was dismayed;
The Banner, boys that floated, was run aloft with joy,
God bless the hands that broke the boom and saved Apprentice Boys. CHORUS.
