Subject: Ladino Hanukkah Songs
From: Genie
Date: 10 Dec 01 - 11:32 PM

I need some Ladino Hanukkah songs for a gig. I know "Ocho Kandelikas," (and can post the lyrics and chords if anyone wants them), but that's the only Ladino one I know for Hanukkah. Got any more? (MIDIs would be nice, but words and chords are fine, too.)

Thanks,
Genie

Carol, Thanks for the Zemerl link! It looks like a great site. Problem is, I need to know which songs to look for. I'd like to choose three or four that are well known, easy to play, or just plain good songs. I can't tell that from a list of titles.

The Hanukkah songs I sing are O Chanukah, My Dreydl, Light One Candle, Sovivon (I think that's the title), Ocho Kandelikas, and Rock of Ages (Mo Oz Tzur). Only one is Ladino, and I'd like to add other Ladino songs that my Ladino clients (senior citizens) would know. Any suggestions?

Genie

I'm afraid I don't know anything about it. I just remember seeing the thread a while back.

One thing you could try doing would be to post a question to the Zemerl forum at this link. It looks like you'll need to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to post your own question.

Also, what if you asked your Ladino clients if they can tell you the names of some of the songs they remember?

I thought I was going to have to type this one out, but I found it at Rhino Records (click), on the liner notes of a CD called To Life! Songs Of Chanukah And Other Jewish Celebrations. Rhino always does a good job on their reissue collections, and this one is particularly good.

Beautiful Chanukah is here, eight candles for me.

One candle, two candles, three candles, four candles, five candles, six candles, seven candles, eight candles for me.

Many parties will be held, with joy and with pleasure.

One candle . . .

I will cook pastelikos [a Sephardic delicacy] with almonds and honey.

Album notes:
While most people think of the German derived Yiddish as the lingua franca of the Jews in the Diaspora, Ladino is an old Jewish language used by the Jews of Spain and the countries of their later exile after the Inquisition in 1492. In fact, scholars today who wish to study Spanish texts from the time of Ferdinand and Isabella I, make frequent reference to Ladino dictionaries to find the meaning of archaic terms that have only been kept in use by Sephardic Jews.

This song, with its very Spanish-sounding melody, is also a reminder that much of what gives Spanish music its sound came from the music of the Sephardic Jews who brought their Moorish-sounding music and instruments to Spain during its Golden Age.

Joe, Thanks for posting Ocho Kandelikas.  That's one I personally don't need, since I already sing it, but I was thinking of adding it at Mudcat, and you saved me the trouble!

When I sing it, I usually alternate these English verses (poetic license taken in some places for the sake of rhyme) with the Ladino ones.  It's a great sing-along.   I like to start the chorus v e r y  s l o w l y and then gradually speed up the tempo as we go from  "una kandelika" to "ocho kandelikas."   (Kinda like folks do with Hava Nagila.  Not a novel idea, but a lot of fun.)

Eight Little Candles (Ocho Kandelikas)

Beautiful Hanuka is here,
Eight candles burning bright and clear. (Repeat)

Chorus:
One little candle, two little candles, ...,
Eight candles burning bright and clear.

Many parties we will have
Filled with happiness and joy!  (Repeat)

Chorus

Little pastries we will eat
With almonds and honey, oh, so sweet! (Repeat)

Chorus

Zemer Atik or Nigun Atik

Hebrew Lyrics
(English Translation)

Od nashuva el nigun atik
(Again we return to the ancient song)
Vehazemer ye'if v'yer'erav
(And the melody will linger on)
Od gav'a m'shumar nashik, nashik
(When we raise our glasses with a friend)
Alzei einayim v'eivav
(Our eyes will be as bright as our hearts)

Tovu, tovu ohaleinu
(How good, how good are our tents)
Ki machol hiftzi'a
(Because there's dancing there)
Tovu, tovu ohaleinu
(How good, how good are our tents)
Od nashuva el nigun atik
(Still we will return to the ancient song)

Genie, you mentioned you had the chords to Ocho Kandelikas? Would be great if you could post them here. I'm hoping to perform it for friends around Januka time, and would be most grateful to you! Thank you very much.
