Don't forget to bring Joe down to the Old Black Bull in Stratford on Thursday night.

It's a local session - only 10 minutes on the bus fom you - Joe will be most welcome and we might even let you sing!

You know the pub, it's about 100 yards from the Old Town Hall in Stratford Broadway and used to be called Mulligan's.

If you want to set up something for another night the Railway Hotel in Angel Lane would probably be willing to let you use the conservatory. Call Jan on 0208 534 3123.

I have a meeting in London on Wednesday. If Joe is out and about that evening, that would suit me best. Otherwise I should be able to stay down there for a day or two, and maybe get to that bash in Stratford.

Failing all that, could you enlarge on the "going north" bit? Will he be going anywhere near Sherwood Forest?

Well, I'm game for singing any evening, although I suppose I might have jet lag Monday. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are open - I'll leave it to Micca to make arrangements. I'll spend the days wandering London, and then I head to the home of Bill Sables on Friday August 16.

Oh, I need a bit of advice: When I'm waiting for a train, what can I do with my suitcase? I thought of traveling with a backpack, but that's a bit too Spartan for a 3-week trip for me. I'm leaving the home of Ian C on Friday, August 30, and staying my last night at Micca's. If I get into London and Micca's not there yet, would the train station or somewhere have a place where I can check my suitcase for a reasonable fee?
By my last day, I'm hoping to have that suitcase full of songbooks I expect to find at ridiculously low prices....

While in London, Denmark Street (also known as Tin Pan Alley) is definately worth a visit.

My personal favourite shop is Andy's where my son was allowed to try a vintage gibson gold top and I had the chance to try a rather old and excellent sounding Martin acoustic! (Acoustics on the first floor).

Joe, the British Library is a two-minute walk from all three of the rail termini serving "the north" - ie Kings Cross, St Pancras and Euston.

Why do you need to know this? Well if you get a reader's pass (usually a ten-minute wait; tell them you're researching something) , the music and rare books libraries are phenomenal resources. More important, the building has extensive and well-appointed "facilities" - including free luggage lockers. If you've bought loads of songbooks and need a really huge locker, go to the desk and they'll give you a key; otherwise help yourself to one of normal proportions, for which you'll need a (returnable) deposit coin. (20p or 1GBP I think.)

I should be there to say hello, either Wednesday or Thursday.

On a couple of occasions they let me leave stuff overnight, but I did ask first (I've got a reader's pass.)

BTW there's a curious catholic church in Ogle St (St Charles Borromeo) if you get the time - still Neocatechumenate a year or two ago,in the face of much hostility from parts of the UK hierarchy. (Huge walk-in font etc.) St Ethelreda's (Ely Place) is the oldest, and survived the reformation because it was the private chapel of the Spanish ambassador.

It was a fair question though, Ed- left luggage facilities at stations were withdrawn for a good while in some places because of the terrorist threat, and in some places haven't been reinstated.

And in my opinion leaving luggage at the mainline stations is more than a reasonable fee. Even the loos (OK, restrooms) cost. Many mainline stations still don't have self-service lockers since the security clampdown, unless that's changed very recently.

They don't have any left-luggage lockers in the London terminals of the sort they have in other countries, allegedly because of the possibility of someone depositing a suitcase with a bomb in ot.

Instead they have Left Luggage offices, with a charge of £5 for every item. Why that is supposed to be in any way safer than coin-in-the-slot lockers is something I haven't been able to work out. They don't have any security procedures or anything like that, it's just done the same way it's been done since Victorian Days. There've been various detective stories over the years involving bodies being deposited in trunks. Maybe the £5 charge is supposed to stop that kind of thing happening...

The British Library sounds a great idea.

Here is the up to date news, Joe arrived on time on Monday and we spent the afternoon at Greenwich looking at the "Cutty Sark" ( the ship not the whiskey!!) today Tuesday, Joe had a day sightseeing in Central London and the evening at "Sharps" at its Summer home in the "Hemmingford Arms " pub, wher he sang some songs and listened to some more, we arrived home just after midnight, we will be in the Black Lion,(back bar next to the arch at the left hand end of the pub) at about 8 o clock tomorrow ,Wednesday August 14, as stated at the beginning of this thread.

We have just seen Joe off on the train to Yorkshire, where he will be in the very capable care of Bill Sables, after a very enjoyable visit. that culminated in a singing/music session at the old Black Bull ,in Stratford, east London last night, with Manitas, Dave Bryant and Lynda(of leather fame, Stony Stratford attendees will need no reminding), and Fionn, and Joe and Dave got to sing a bit too!!! a memorable evening, we hope to get a few together on Joes last night in London, before he flies home, that will be on Friday 30 August propably at the Black Lion Plaistow, so contact me if you can make it. lets give him a good send off !!!!

He is on his way home, I have just returned from putting him into the hands of the airline at Heathrow, and he should be taking off in about 15 mins, May I say we very much enjoyed his visit, a nice get together last night at the Black Lion( I will put pix up when I can) It was a pleasure to see and talk to Joe again, see you again, mate..
