Subject: Lyr Add: I DO LIKE TO BE BESIDE THE SEASIDE From: GUEST,Den at work Date: 09 Jul 03 - 01:02 PM I also found this: Beside The Seaside Everyone delights to spend their summer's holiday Down beside the side of the silvery sea I'm no exception to the rule In fact, if I'd my way I'd reside by the side of the silvery sea. But when you're just the common or garden Smith or Jones or Brown At bus'ness up in town You've got to settle down. You save up all the money you can till summer comes around Then away you go To a spot you know Where the cockle shells are found. Oh! I do like to be beside the seaside I do like to be beside the sea! I do like to stroll upon the Prom, Prom, Prom! Where the brass bands play: "Tiddely-om-pom-pom!" So just let me be beside the seaside I'll be beside myself with glee And there's lots of girls beside, I should like to be beside Beside the seaside! Beside the sea! (8 bar interlude) William Sykes the burglar, He'd been out to work one night Filled his bag with jewels, cash, and plate. Constable Brown felt quite surprised when William hove in sight Said he: "The hours you're keeping are far too late." So he grabbed him by the collar and lodged him safe and sound in jail Next morning looking pale Bill told a tearful tale. The judge said, "For a couple of months I'm sending you away!" Said Bill: "How kind! Well! If you don't mind Where I spend my holiday!" Oh! Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh I do Love to be beside the sea side From: GUEST Date: 10 Jul 03 - 09:18 AM Is "I do like to be beside the seaside" a British Folk song?. Then God help us.I don't think so. Especially as it was written by a pair of professional songwriters. It's a jolly song for the singing and it is ingrained in the memories of a vast number of UK people, but Folk song ? Nah... you might just as well call "Can't buy me love" a folk song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh I do Love to be beside the sea side From: IanC Date: 10 Jul 03 - 09:22 AM Guest Any song's a folk song, so long as people sing it themselves. Perhaps you mean "traditional song". I sing Norwegian Wood and, when I sing it, it's a folk song. OK? ;-) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh I do Love to be beside the sea side From: Steve Parkes Date: 10 Jul 03 - 11:51 AM It's a music hall song, which is a legitimate genre in its own right. No problems with crossover, I hope? And don't forget, even traditional songs were written ("created" if yo prefer) by someone originally; not by pros, of course. A folk song is a song they'll let you sing in a folk club. It took me about twenty years to suss that out! Steve |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh I do Love to be beside the sea side From: Mrs.Duck Date: 10 Jul 03 - 12:50 PM Anyone got a tune to go with the verses? Its one of those songs that everyone knows the chorus and the rest has slipped out of use but it could be fun. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh I do Love to be beside the sea sid From: BuckMulligan Date: 10 Jul 03 - 04:40 PM Isn't this the same song Basil Rathbone sang (as Holmes in disguise as a music hall singer, of course) in "The Adventures ..." ? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh I do Love to be beside the sea side From: Ed. Date: 10 Jul 03 - 05:09 PM Indeed it is Buck. A fellow, Holmsian? I do love the sinister flute melody in that film (to my mind one of the best of the Rathbone catalogue) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh I do Love to be beside the sea sid From: BuckMulligan Date: 11 Jul 03 - 12:24 PM Ed - not exactly a Baker St. Irregular, but I do enjoy the Great Detective. Especially the middle years of the Brett series - best damn Sherlock on film. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh I do Love to be beside the sea side From: Steve Parkes Date: 14 Jul 03 - 03:29 AM As a bit of a Holmsean myself, I must say that, having read the entire canon, some of it several times, and heard/seen much of it in radio and tv adaptations, the Rathbone films are a bit of a joke. Most of them are "based on the characters created by ACD", but with invented stories not based on the originals. They fall into that genre of "so bad they're good"; very entertaining, but only of value as curiosities to the true Baker St buff. Does that sound a bit arrogant? Good! Steve |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh I do Love to be beside the sea sid From: BuckMulligan Date: 14 Jul 03 - 01:47 PM Yes - they're a "thing unto themselves" Quite enjoyable but sort of apocryphal to the canon. More important than the story divergences is the fact that the characterizations of H&W are nothing like Doyle's characters. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh I do Love to be beside the sea sid From: GUEST,McGrath of Altcar Date: 22 Aug 03 - 11:10 AM The first chord of Oh I do Like to be beside the seaside is an augmented chord. Whenever I'm trying to identify the chord in a song. I use OIDLTBBTS as an aide memoire. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh I do Love to be beside the sea side From: Billy Weeks Date: 25 Aug 03 - 06:05 AM Mark Sheridan (1867-1918) made the song famous.
