I was listening to UK jazz man George Melly on the wireless the other night talking to some US jazz men. He mentioned a song called "You can play with your poodle, but leave my pussy alone". Being an animal lover myself (they can't touch you for it), I listened and listened and listened, but they never sang it. Does anyone know it?

I don't know that version, but there is an oldie by Tampa Red called "Let Me Play With Your Poodle". The one you mention is probably a variant. Anyway here are the lyrics to the Tampa Red one.

ead Belly recorded a song with a like title. It was released with a medley of cowboys songs on either the Disc or Asch label. Never since released on LP or CD where these titles have reemerged but S/F have it in their archives.

I have a tape of Lightin' Hopkins singing the song. Another verse is: "Two old maids lying up in bed, one turned over and this is what she said..." Chorus above.
