Thanks again Celtic Blues 5, but yes, I do know for sure that Dinah Washington recorded "Look to the rainbow". However it's the Burl Ives recording that I am wondering about? does anyone know of it ? Also , if you are a musician Celticblue 5 have you got a good chord progression for the song "Look to the rainbow" or does anyone else ? Especially Joe Offer or Allison?? Many thanks to "Alison" Joe Offer and "celtic blues 5" You have renewed my faith in the powers of the Mudcat Cafe. A relatively, self-taught newcomber to this medium I have been trying to procure these lyrics since last Xmas, when I first went on-line, without success until now. Now, the "folk " connection ,could I have heard a Burl Ives recording,???? on a radio show, of this song? My favourite version would have to be that by Dinah Washington ?

Elaine Page is awesome! I once saw a show on PBS that had difference performances she had been in over the years...MAN she is good! I especially loved her singing "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien" Oh! Talk about a heart stopper!

As a matter of interest, I suspect that there are at least two "London" versions of the soundtrack of "Evita".

The original version was unusual insofar as the record was released before the show was ever staged. This is the one where Julie Covington plays Evita. Many of us were disappointed that Julie didn't get the stage role, which went initially to Elaine Paige.

And yes, it does rock - the best thing Lloyd Webber has done,IMHO.

No, Mbo, my name wasn't inspired by T.S Eliot! I got it because I was in a folk group at school called Fireboots and my proper name can be shortened to Kat (my name's Kathryn) so I spelt it like the animal and took the Fire bit from the band name!

My two favourite musicals are West Side Story and Guys and Dolls, two choose one song from each it has to be Somewhere from West Side Story and Sit Down you're rocking the boat from Guys & Dolls a real showstopper.

Perfectly Firecat! Ours is a major Rumpuscat! I even started making up T.S. Eliot-esque names for other cats I see, like "Bumbleboozer". "And you might now and then supply sone caviar or Strausburg pie, some parted grouse or salmon paste--he's sure to have his own personal taste..." BTW Firecat sounds T.S. Eliot-esque too!

there was a filmed version in 1954.

oops you are right Mary got my musicals mixed up,

the London Evita recording is still the best, Julie covington as Eva, Paul Jones as Peron, David Essex as Che, and Barbara Dickson as the mistress......

I saw the musical in London with Colm Wilkinson as Che, he was fantastic, (I'm convinced I saw him as Judas a long time before that), and was thrilled to see him again as Jean Val Jean the next time I was in London......

never saw a Javert to beat Phillip Quast.......

for sheer energy my favourites have to include:-

the barn raising scene from "Seven Brides..."
"June is busting out all over" from "carousel"
and Gene Kelly tap dancing on roller skates from ???"It's always fair weather"....

I love "Brigadoon" even with the fake painted backdrops and the awful accents..... gorgeous movie....

Actually, Three Dog Night DID do a cover of a song from Hair...can't remember the name, let me look. It was one of 3 songs from Hair that were covered by pop folks, the other 2 being "Good Morning Starshine" by Oliver and "Age of Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In" by the 5th Dimension. Everybody sing with the 5th Dimension!

Thanks for clearing that up, Firecat! It's weird, at the end of the Soundtrack CD for the movie, the last thing you hear are the tolling bells, and after that there is an actually minute of total silence before the CD stops. Very moving....>>sniff<<

Yeah, Mbo, I was wondering about "Another Suitcase In Another Hall" as well. Apparently, when madonna got the part of Eva, she INSISTED that she had to sing it. I've just watched the movie,ending up in tears as usual(!) and they've missed out the 2nd verse of Lament that Eva sings and got Che to sing a totally different verse to Peron.

Hope that's cleared up the mystery of Another Suitcase in Another Hall for you!

Finnegan's Rainbow is a favorite. I like "Look to the Rainbow" and "That Old Devil Moon." Also Camelot, for the title song, and "I Wonder What the King is Doing Tonight." I also love Mary Poppins,especially "Chim Chimany" and "Feed the Birds". Hair had some good tunes, including "Let the Sun Shine In",Where Do I Go", and "One." West Side Story for "Maria","America","When You're a Jet", and "Tonight." I have great affection for "I Was Born Under a Wanderin Star" from Paint Your Wagon,especially as sung by Lee Marvin. If I have a bad hangover or a miserable cold,I can approximate his tone. "Summertime" from Porgy and Bess is one of the greatest songs ever written. "Sit Down Yer Rockin' the Boat" is great from Guys and Dolls.

What was the heart-rending tune from Oliver,sung by the kid in the title role? And another from Man of LaMancha,sung by DonQuixote, that was very inspirational?

You know, I've never actually heard the London Cast? I started with the Broadway Cast, with Patty Lupone (AWESOME), Mandy Patinkin, and Bob Gunton, who was the only Peron to use an accent! "Poleeteecs, de art of de posseebul!"

Mandy does some awesome flexing of his voice in "The Money Kept Rolling In"!

I love "Buenos Aires" too! Especially that part when she screams in Spanish! But it took me a looong time to figure out the "give me the best eider down and silence". That Tim Rice!

Not sure about some of the things in the movie. Why did they cut lines from "Oh What a Circus"..."Who am I who dares to keep his head up high while millions weep? What exception to the rule? Opportunist? Traitor? Fool? Or just a man who grew and saw, from 17 to 24, his country bled, crucified, she's not the only one who's died!" and "Ride on my train, o my people, and when it's your turn to die, you'll remember, they fired those cannons, sang lamentations, not just for Eva, for Argentina, not just for Eva, for everybody."???

And why did they give "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" to Eva? It's supposed to be Peron's girlfriend who sings that. Especially in the movie, when they went and got the awesome Andrea Corr (from The Corrs) to play the part, and give her one big song to Madonna? Puzzlement!!!

Hey Guys 'n Dolls I've been right through this thread hoping that someone would mention the show (not the greatest) "Finian's Rainbow". It has a great song called " Look to the rainbow" which Fred Astaire sang in the movie version. I've been trying for ages to get the Lyric from several sources including this Forum, but unsuccessfully. Can any of you "Broadway Buffs" help please?

I knew that Che was played by C T Wilkinson but I didn't know that he created Jean Valjean!!!

I forgot about Buenos Aires, especially when Eva sings :-

I actually became a fan of Evita after nicking off with my dad's vinyl copy of the cast recording with Julie Covington as Eva.

BTW did you know that the very first Che, in the original London Cast, was C.T. Wilkinson, who later de-initialized his name as Colm Wilkinson, who created the role of Jean Valjean in Les Mis in London & on Broadway? Oooh I forgot "On This Night of A Thousand Stars" that Augustin Magaldi sings in the beginning of Evita! That's a fun song to sing!

I'm just used to learning things by ear but I kept on rewinding the tape! Oh well!

Dang girl! You must have a good ear! For the longest time I couldn't figure out what the "Kapow! Die!" thing was. Due to Antonio's accent (which is a cool thing, don't get me wrong) I couldn't get some of the lyrics. What I thought they were are different in someplaces from yours, and I'm not sure which is right! I thought that "back to the war" was "Backs to the wall! Aim high! That Juan guy was having a ball!" But I may be wrong! Now why couldn't they include the lyrics with the CD?

Wow! - What a lot of great songs have been mentioned here! There are a couple of obscure Harold Arlen musicals that have wonderful music - "Jamaica" & "House of Flowers" - hard to find, but if you can get your hands on the recordings, do it. The original cast of Jamaica included Lena Horne, Ricardo Montleban (yes, the rich, Corinthian leather guy, lol), Adelaide Hall, Ossie Davis, & Alvin Ailey. House of Flowers had Pearl Bailey, Ray Walston, Juanita Hall (who, I believe, was the original Bloody Mary in South Pacific), Alvin Ailey, and a very young Diahann Carroll. Both are great for women singers to study phrasing & inflection.

Of the more well-known musicals, at the top I'd have to put La Mancha - fine songs, both musically & as character-defining vehicles. Richard Kiley & Joan Diener were terrific.

Say, I'm not so sure "Lizzy Borden" is from a Broadway musical. My Chad Mitchell Trio songbook doesn't have it, and the Vanguard The Very Best of the Chad Mitchell Trio CD just says that the song was written by Michael Brown and that it was recorded by the Trio in 1962. Who is/was Michael Brown? He's not listed in my Broadway Musicals book.
