Hey everybody the tavern's moved to another thread. Come on over we're having a hell of a time!

I don't know how to do a blue clicky but the post from Catrin dated 21-Sep-00 - 06:16 PM has one that will take you there. So does the post from Lepus Rex dated 22-Sep-00 - 10:19 AM.

OK, just left me bike locked to the railings and thought I'd stop by for the early pint.

I sing, play guitar (Nice old 6-string Fender acoustic and my new baby, the 12-string Ovation) and I'm, hem hem of mature years... learned about folksinging at college in Brighton UK back in the sixties and sort of just carried on.

Now living in Brussels, Belgium - still singing and playing wherever and whenever: not fussy about the music, if a song's got less than four chords, I'll give it a go,,,

Thanks mate, mine's a Leffe Blonde! And an order of frites with mayonnaise to go.

Love to you all

Noreen, My thanks for your reply and for the dance invitation, but even my legs can't stretch from Hawaii. As for being a friend of Morticia, well, the news is worse than that, I'm her AUNT, but don't be holding that against me, you can't choose your relatives! It's 10:30pm on Friday here, I think it's like 5:30am there. Still want to dance? Fin

Oh, hi RedCelt. Health inspectors showed up, said something about the place 'reeking of rabbits,' so we actually moved it next door. I fell asleep here, woke up over there...

Any room for another new guy at the bar? I found my way here on directions from a lovely wee lass that I met at a grand session the other night (there seem to be a couple of threads going on that Texas session). I'll just do hear what I did there... horn my way in, start singing enthusiastically (volume masking for talent) and beating my dead goat (who looks suspiciously like a bodhran, but sounds more like a temmis shoe in a washing machine)

Just point me to the beer...... (if my hands are full, I'll stop hitting the goat)

Jeff

How could anyone think bad things about a place like this! Thanks, Praise! And welcome, all of us, to the Mudcat.

Now, I didn't hear much coordination on Mary Mac. Let's get it together people! And faster!

Another pale ale here! No! The hell with beer, gimme an Irish coffee.

You know the trouble with getting drunk on Irish coffee? You get to the point where you finally want to pass out but the caffeine keeps you awake! It's the worst feeling in the world but never tell someone from Callahan's that there is anything wrong with Irish coffee!

Hi everyone.

My, but things have gotten a little slow today.

I just stopped by for a wee drop before leaving for a few days to see our grandson. Young Connor first saw the light about 14 months ago, our son and daughter-in-law's first and also our first. I'll drop on by when I get back to see how things are going and if there are any new faces.

Before I go, however, I plan on starting another trivia thread. Just to see how many are interested.

Until then--

Slainte!

Hi. I'll be the mostly-quiet one who's just happy to drink in the music and (try to) follow witty Mudcat conversations. Inadvertently, I arrived here yesterday while searching for some lyrics. 24 hours ago I did not know of your existence, but now I'm thinking of little else besides the topics I've been reading here... I've only scratched the surface and my head is spinning (virtual intoxication?). Last night I was too musically-overloaded to sleep. Sometime after midnight I jumped out of bed, cleared the clutter off my turntable and listened to some songs that you have made me happy to think about again. It's too late, I'm already addicted to this place. There is so much to absorb and I look forward to getting to know you more.

MMario;
yes, we must have a gathering of the Southern Tier Mudcatters sometime soon, eh?

I got a card a couple weeks ago from a woman who is organizing the opening of a time capsule buried by my sixth grade class in 1976...I think it is on October 28th, which probably means I won't make it (as I would be celebrating Samhain somewhere, maybe in the UK, maybe in Boston, but not likely Elmira...) but who knows?

Anyway, I was the second prize winner with my contribution of a 1976 world almanac; the kid that won first place donated a portable TV set...sadly, the school building was torn down years ago (even an old maple planted by the school's namesake was razed for a block of ugly split-level houses) but they removed the capsule for safe-keeping until the year 2000. It is hard to believe 24 years have passed...

on second thought, it's not too early for that whisky...

Thanks for the Jamesons, Jon! I hope to make it to North Wales for some actual glass clinking with you someday...but the virtual is nice, too.

is it too early for whisky? hmm, maybe...let's pretend it's Sunday and serve some brunch for them newcomers, who soaked up too much celebration last night, that's just falling outta bed...we are kind to our newbies, we are...at least at first! :)

toasted sourdough bread anyone? with butter and homemade peach jam, of course...oh, and French Roast coffee...made with chicory and hot milk, Nawlins style...

Hey, Burke, hope you had a nice time in England. I was there in June for 12 days and can't wait to go back; maybe in late October if I can swing it! (Samhain at the Rollrights...ahhh)
You say you are in rural New York; where? I come from Elmira...

That sounds like excellent news, Jock. And please let me congratulate you as well (about the Ardbeg, of course, not your engagement!).

Robby, my recall of Dublin is starting to go a little hazy at times. I can't think of a Meehan's bar off hand, but there are several pharmacies that go by the name of Meehan. As you say yourself, it's quite a common surname.

Thanks for reminding me of McMoo, Spaw, I'll give him a shout.

Excuse me a minute while I slip out to the gents, it's time to heave and haul. Can you start another pint for me there?

Jock, I'm sorry I missed the Lagavulin, although a wee tot of Ardbeg will do the trick.

I'm sort of new here. I've been lurkin' about for 4-5 weeks now and wishing that I had found the site earlier (found it searching for the Northwest Passage Lyrics).

Born and bred in Stra'ven, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Dragged to various folk clubs by older (10 yrs older) sister, as she was the folkie in the family. Lapped it up, but now that I'm living in Sweden I'm missing the folk scene very badly. Thank God for Mudcat!

Just like to say thanks for having me, and barman, do you have any Bruichladdich 21 year old? T.C

Did someone mention a ceilidh? Woohoo!! Always up for a bit of dancing.

I blame (thank) my parents for my love of folk music; they used to drag me and my siblings along to concerts by the Corries in Ayr town hall. I also remember at the age of five being taken to a ceilidh in a tin shack on Skye; hardly saw a soul during the week, but come the Saturday night hundreds of folk arrived out of nowhere and crammed into this tiny hall. Magic!!

Good news, the barman's just found a bottle of 25 year old Ardbeg.

Jock

OK, I know it's late but I just got here and I'm thinking if we move those couches out of the way we could probably make room for 2 sets to dance plus room for musicians, maybe even 2 sets plus a half set. I was out of the rotation to play our weekly pick-up céilí and would love to play for dancers tonight. Maybe the High Cauled Cap to start off?

I discovered Thistle and Shamrock a couple of years ago....Fiona is my regularly scheduled Sunday night date...*G*

I used to be quite the little headbanger...started out playing bass in a garage band, playing Zeppelin and AC/DC..

But I always liked acoustic blues and drinking songs...my dad taught me a bunch of them when I was a little kid ('go sing that for your mother'....'EEEEEEEEKKKKKKKK!!!!!'')

I grew up with it, I guess. But I'm hearing a lot more music here than I knew before- it's great!

Gadzooks.....the Crown is gone already.....hmmmmmmm

oh, there is another bottle....Bona Fortuna loves me...

Naemanson, I mentioned the Pogues because they did a pretty kick-ass version of South Australia.

Robby, Matt, nice to know there are a couple of more fans....Shaney Mac is just too cool.

Speaking of South Australia...

As we wallop round Cape Horn!

Heave away! Haul Away!

You'll wish to God you'd never been born!

We're bound for South Australia!

How did everyone get interested in folk music? Was it someting you grew up with? or a taste that you developed?
