Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 10 Apr 07 - 10:00 AM It always amazes me that crocuses, daffodils, tuplips, irises, ladies' mantle, and many other things, can grow when it is so derned cold. Every day the garden changes...plants are coming alive again The weather report for today is snow. ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 07 Apr 07 - 01:34 PM It's been snowing for hours here! To console myself, I've started eating the chocolate rabbit... ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 07 Apr 07 - 10:11 AM Should be frozen by now, Little Hawk. How's your car? Snowsqualls again in Goderich, eh Mooh? However do you survive over there along #21? ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Little Hawk Date: 05 Apr 07 - 06:05 PM This may be a good thing. I got my car stuck in the soft mud in the side lane a few days ago. If it freezes solid, I will be able to get the car back on the paved road. I'm in the same fix the German army was in in October '41. Stuck fast in the mud. They prayed for colder weather. When it came, it turned out to be even colder than what they'd had in mind, however. |

Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 18 Mar 07 - 05:31 PM WAY WAY WAY more snow in Toronto than in Goderich. I saw snowdrops and crocuses in Goderich. What's with that?! ~b.w. |

And we had a sunny morning, 8 degrees, some little things sprouting spring-like in the garden, Eagle's back looking hopeful ('fraid he's outta luck, as the lake's still very frozen - no mergansers for him this spring). But I'm not gloating, no not me, about Upper Canadian sufferin'. |

Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Peace Date: 12 Mar 07 - 03:43 PM Yeah. Just like the spots that arise on one's skin after exposure to poison ivy are pretty. Or the red bumps caused by crabs. Or the swelling associated with a bad histamine reaction, or the oozing gore when a hyena is able to grab the belly of a wounded gazelle, or the festering sores caused by scratching at the bites of black flies. There is a certain je ne sais pas quois to it all. Filthy %$#@&*% #$%@ that has nothing better to do than %$#@ up the roads and make them slippery. I just $%^#$%* love winter. |

Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Little Hawk Date: 12 Mar 07 - 08:41 AM That's why the bears attack the snowmobilers! They're trying to hibernate, but they can't sleep through that awful noise. There's nothing crabbier than a bear that's been woken up by a snowmobile....although I've heard that creeping up on them and goosing them can have a similar effect. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 12 Mar 07 - 08:01 AM SPRING finally arrives in Ontario! ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Rowan Date: 04 Mar 07 - 04:57 PM Bee, I reckon it must be something to do with testosterone levels in males. Or is the size of the dick? I suspect if you don't have enough of it the noise made by snowmobiles (and trailbikes) must do something to help them compensate. Cheers, Rowan |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Bee Date: 03 Mar 07 - 06:00 PM Goodonya, Beer. A river, eh? I've always wanted to live on a river, but the blackfly attacks in spring on local rivers are pretty daunting. I've canoed (okay, mostly drifted) half a dozen times down the Musquodoboit River in late May,and if yer one day off on fly-timing, they will go lookin' and only find your picked bones. But I'd be thrilled to see a blackfly chewing on my arm about now... |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Beer Date: 03 Mar 07 - 05:46 PM Bee, not all men like snowmobiles. i for one can't stand them because of the noise and I have a river right behind my house. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: gnu Date: 03 Mar 07 - 03:36 PM Oh, yeah, right, sorry. Apologies to John Wing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: gnu Date: 03 Mar 07 - 03:35 PM Um... if there is enough snow to snowmobile in Ontario, why are the bears not hibernating? |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Little Hawk Date: 03 Mar 07 - 01:48 PM Bears have been known to attack snowmobilers. I know exactly how they feel. The bears, I mean... |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Bee Date: 03 Mar 07 - 11:23 AM Beer, we got about 10 cm. which is rapidly melting in the bright sunshine, but I bet we'll have some of that Eastern Shore fog this evening. Kitty thinks snow is great fun, especially when trying to catch what's coming off the shovel, until his paws get wet and cold, at which time a great and pitiful mewing occurs. I'm trying hard to be patient, but I'm gritting my teeth because my very good friend/neighbour, having had little chance to use his snowmobile this winter, has been running it up and down the lake for the past two hours. Given there are pools of water every three metres, I'm hoping he'll soon be wet enough to want to go in. The noise it makes is the worst kind. I'm convinced men hear differently than women, and don't actually hear the high overtones that make it so unpleasant. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: black walnut Date: 03 Mar 07 - 10:24 AM Yup, there are still big (B I G !) chunks of ice falling from the top of the Toronto CN tower (currently the tallest freestanding structure in the world). Some of the pieces are as big as cars! They have streets cordoned off, so nobody's been hurt, but there are some cars in there getting pretty smashed up. ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Mooh Date: 03 Mar 07 - 07:58 AM The news had film of ice falling from tall buildings, and damaged cars below. Winter hazards can be An Inconvenient Truth, say what! Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Rowan Date: 02 Mar 07 - 10:41 PM On ABC Radio National (OZ) we heard that 250kg blocks of ice were falling off some 550m high building (name given but unmemorable for me) into the streets below. That's some icicles! I'd be staying inside too! Cheers, Rowan |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Peace Date: 02 Mar 07 - 10:31 PM It's lots like summer here except for the snow and coolness in the evenings, and during the day. |
Subject: RE: BS: Winter finally arrives in Ontario... From: Beer Date: 02 Mar 07 - 10:26 PM Had about a foot of the white stuff where I live which is about an hour South West of Montreal. It seems that it went around us. Now fog has set in and the traffic on the secondary highway is at a snail pace. Reminds me of home Bee. Beer (adrien) |
