Subject: RE: Sng/Ssn Stoke NKent UK Sun 25Jan From: Richard Bridge Date: 24 Jan 09 - 07:13 PM I have been in tonight and checked the beer. I can recommend it. The Burns Special (4.5%) is adequately bitter, with a somewhat malty front end, a clean and lemony, sightly fragrant, midrange (presumably to cut through the grease in the haggis), and a smooth finish without the sulphurous aftertaste that is so common and that I so detest. We drank the barrel out apart from 8 pints last time. Let's do better this time. Some young people who were enjoying the karaoke tonight may come too! Has anyone got "Bring us a barrell" clear for this time - or that other one that I think Ramskyte recorded "Drink boys, drink, and see that ye do not spill, for if ye do ye shall drink two, for that is our master's will" Or the Frenchy one. |
Subject: RE: Sng/Ssn Stoke NKent UK Sun 25Jan From: Richard Bridge Date: 24 Jan 09 - 02:29 PM Thank you for that Jock. I understand we will be getting some roastpotatoes - not wholly Burns-ish. I considered buying a haggis today but thought it would look rude to walk in with it slice it up and hand it round - and I was NOT going to get involved in mashing turnips! |

Subject: RE: Sng/Ssn Stoke NKent UK Sun 25Jan From: Richard Bridge Date: 22 Jan 09 - 02:43 PM And someone had better bring Wee Jock, as I doubt if anyone else can get the words of this right (it being Burns Night) ADDRESS TO A HAGGIS Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face, Great chieftain o the puddin'-race! Aboon them a' ye tak your place, Painch, tripe, or thairm: Weel are ye wordy of a grace As lang's my arm. The groaning trencher there ye fill, Your hurdies like a distant hill, Your pin wad help to mend a mill In time o need, While thro your pores the dews distil Like amber bead. His knife see rustic Labour dight, An cut you up wi ready slight, Trenching your gushing entrails bright, Like onie ditch; And then, O what a glorious sight, Warm-reekin, rich! Then, horn for horn, they stretch an strive: Deil tak the hindmost, on they drive, Till a' their weel-swall'd kytes belyve Are bent like drums; The auld Guidman, maist like to rive, 'Bethankit' hums. Is there that owre his French ragout, Or olio that wad staw a sow, Or fricassee wad mak her spew Wi perfect sconner, Looks down wi sneering, scornfu view On sic a dinner? Poor devil! see him owre his trash, As feckless as a wither'd rash, His spindle shank a guid whip-lash, His nieve a nit: Thro bloody flood or field to dash, O how unfit! But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed, The trembling earth resounds his tread, Clap in his walie nieve a blade, He'll make it whissle; An legs an arms, an heads will sned, Like taps o thrissle. Ye Pow'rs, wha mak mankind your care, And dish them out their bill o fare, Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware That jaups in luggies: But, if ye wish her gratefu prayer, Gie her a Haggis |
