...and a damned fine broadcast it was too. A real contrast to what I'm about to listen to. Why do I bother?

The Witches of Elswick album is called 'Out of Bed' and is also on Fellside...I must proof my postings better in future...

Ralphie - thanks for that :o), your a BBC person are you?. Good to know we have some listening!!.

Countess - Ooops...sorry about the Beautiful Jo/Fellside Faustus confusion...I'm really quite tired...zzzzzzz

Glad you enjoyed the show. I too think Random Noises is great, and I'm not just saying that because Chris is my new folky friend ;o).

If anyone would like to send us stuff to play which might not be available in the usual outlets email us at:

folkontheradio@hotmail.com

and we'll give details of where to send it.

Cheers

Fi

Chris & Fee

Just listened to both shows on the replayer. Have to say that I was more engrossed in Random Noises, largely because Cool as Folk consisted entirely of items from my CD collection. Such good taste you have!

btw, for all those now seeking out Dr Faustus, The First Cut is on Fellside , not BeJo, wonderful though that label is. (I'm surprised that Larkrise Ranter hasn't pointed that out too ;-)

Thanks for the info, and the tribute to John.
We're all devastated here at BH.
Kershaw is going to do his tribute to John on R3 on Sunday.
Keep up the good work
Cheers Ralphie

This is what we played this week. The Floor Spot featured Tim van Eyken. Thanks to Larkrise Ranter in the chatroom for tips on pronunciation ;o), and to everyone who listened...we hope you enjoyed it!:

The Barely Works – Byker Hill
from The Big Beat (Cooking Vinyl)

The Witches of Elswick – Honey for the Bee (False Love Won Back

FLOOR SPOT: Dr Faustus – The Cambric Shirt
from The First Cut (Beautiful Jo)

Fernhill – Gwalch
from - Hynt (Beautiful Jo)

Nancy Kerr and James Fagan – Elsie Marley/
from Between the Dark and the Light (Fellside)

FLOOR SPOT: Tim van Eyken and Robert Harbron – Sussex Waltz
from One Sunday Afternoon (Beautiful Jo)

(The next two were our tribute to John Peel):

June Taybor – The Scarecrow
from Abyssinians (Topic)

The Cheviot Ranters – Cornrig Tunes
originally from unknown album (Topic), taken from FABRICLIVE .07 - John Peel (Fabric)

FLOOR SPOT: Waterson:Carthy – Napoleon's Death

John Spiers and Jon Boden – Jiggery Pokerwork/Haul Away/The Seven Stars
from Bellow (Fellside)

Chris's show on just before Cool as Folk; 'Random Noises' (9pm - 10pm), is also worth tuning in for, this week's entire playlist was a tribute to John Peel and the music he introduced Chris (and of course many others) to:

The Detroit Cobras - Shout Bama Lama; The Velvelettes - Needle in a
Haystack; Jimmy Reed - Hush Hush; Greensleeves - Low and Sweet; The White Stripes - Girl, you have no faith in medicine; The Kingswoods - Pretty Vacent; Joe Strummer and the Mescaleroes - Get Down Moses; Smith and Selway - 15.5 Remake; Richard and Linda Thompson - Dark End of the Street; P J Harvey - Good Fortune; Meanwhile, Back in Communist Russia - Morning After Pill; Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart (John Peel live mix); Louis Jordon and his Tympany Five - Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens; The Undertones - Teenage Kicks.

Haaaa..quite...I'll get that put on a Tshirt !! apologies for apologising :o)

I may well play it on air when I feel competent enough...possibly after 'Melodeons at Witney' if I survive, I'm really looking forward to it!!

Studio hurdy gurdy wasn't behaving last week...or perhaps I don't have the touch....

Hi guys,

Sorry this one's a bit late, been super busy as usual! Just come back from a great Spiers & Boden gig in Oxford (a fundrasier for the folk fest!). Anyway with no further ado here's the set list for last Tuesday's show. Remember that the archive is working now at www.1287am.com so you can still listen to it till next Tuesday.

FLOOR SPOT: Martyn Bennett - Move
From Grit (Realworld)

Martin Simpson – Betsy the Serving Maid (live)
From Live (Beautiful Jo)

BELLOWhead – Rambling Sailor
From E.P.onymous (soon to be released on Fellside) (Cool as Folk is still the only radio show to have played anything by this fantastic ten piece band led by Spiers and Boden!)

FLOOR SPOT: Martyn and Margaret Bennett – Uamh an Oir (Cave of Gold)
From Martyn Bennett – Glen Lyon: A Song Cycle (Foot Stompin')

Andrew McKay – Dead Reckoning
From Pennbucky to Llangenny (Crane Drivin' Music) (a fine collection of contemporary songs about nautical Wales from a Mudcat matey, email us at folkontheradio@hotmail.com for contact details)

Tim van Eyken and Robert Harbron – Ye Mariners
From One Sunday Afternoon (Beautiful Jo)

FLOOR SPOT: Martin Bennett and Martin Low – Harry's in Heaven
From Hardland (Cuillin)

Fernhill – Grey Cock
From Hynt (Beautiful Jo)

FLOOR SPOT: Martyn Bennett with Sorley MacLean – Hallaig
From Martyn Bennett - Bothy Culture (Rykodisc)

I presented this show with my new mate Fee, who, as she says above, has swiftly risen through the ranks from the lady on Mudcat to the lady I met at the Kate Rusby gig to the lady in the chat room to the one-off co-presenter to the full time co-presenter/organiser/e-mailer/promoter! She's got great music taste and a big old CD collection, she's even rumoured to be working on a website for the show, watch this space! So from now on you'll be getting postings/emails from either of us, which might mean you don't have to wait so long for updates/replies (sorry for anyone still waiting for an email reply!).

I'd be interested to hear how well everyone is hearing the show. When I listened back on the broadband campus computers there was a slight hum in the background but it wasn't very intrusive, but others had worse problems with it. If you do have trouble, try listening on a different connection speed. I'll also try and track down the tech people at the studio and see if they can improve the output. But please don't be put off, only a very small number of people have had any problems with it, give it a try!

As the archive is up again, I might has well also mention the playlist for my other show, Random Noises, which is on the hour before Cool as Folk, in case you want to check that out too! I played: Detroit Cobras – I Wanna Holler (But the Town's Too Small); Ryan Adams – Come Pick Me Up; The Battlefield Band – Ms Dynamite of Benbecula / The Alewife T / Little Cascade / Culder's Rant; Ms Dynamite – It Takes More (Bolshy Main Mix); Arthur Russel – The Platform on the Ocean; The Phil Beer Band – Frank and Jesse James; McKay – Thinking of You and Bell x1 – Like I Love You. My co-presenter, Jules, played some stuff to but I never got the details!

Finally, at the end of Cool as Folk, I had a bit of a technical crisis and between a number of silent spots I filled with Eliza Carthy – Fisher Boy, Basement Jaxx – Hot and Cold and BELLOWhead – Prickle Eye Bush. It's far from wonderful radio but if you particularly wanted to hear any of those tracks (have I mentioned that the BELLOWhead is an exclusive that you wont hear anywhere else?!) feel free to listen on the archive from 11pm!

Chris

Bentley...I'd be interested to hear about those myself!!!, as a newcomer to playing an instrument (melodeon, sorry..!) rather than just listening to the music, I've had a bit of trouble finding out what's going on in Berkshire live music/session wise...the Swan is really quite near me (driving), and Bramley is even nearer!!!

Chris and I (he promoted me to co-presenter last week, that's what you get for going in the chatroom!) were talking about Caversham Folk Club off air last Tuesday day, which is the only one I'd heard of...I'll see what he thinks, I think it's a good idea...

Hi Chris - yes, I was listening in on the 128k Ogg stream and there was a thin buzzing noise in the background. Something not quite right in the studio or transmission link there? I wouldn't call it unlistenable but keeping noises like that away is what the technical side of professional broadcasting is about!

Nice programme, despite that.

Thanks for the comments guys. I'll do a full playlist and round-up tomorrow (still got a load to do and it's past midnight! aaargh!). Just a couple of questions:

1) Has anyone else had any 'hum' or distortion listening to the show? I've had a couple of people say it was all but unlistenable but lots more don't even mention it. Last weeks show sounded fine when I listened back to it.

2) Three or four tracks for the Floor Spot feature (where I look at one artist in various permatations)? I said three to four but so far it has been four on each. I realise it takes up a large chunk of the show, but also feel that three is never quite enough to show the full variety of what a lot of these artists do. One of them is normally something a bit different from the norm: ie. Kate Rusby with Show of Hands, Sandy Denny with Led Zeppelin, Martyn Bennett with Margaret Bennett etc. What are your thoughts?

Right later folks,

Chris

Hi Chris - listened to part of your show on Tues and found it quite intersesting. Some interesting spoken gaelic stuff which, in my opinion (for what it's worth) didn't need the (again, in my opinion)rather self indulgent instrumental backing - didn't add to the power of the spoken word, which would have been powerful enogh on its own.

Did try to get into the chatroom but it disconnected me more than once

Keep it up, you're finding some good stuff out there - and giving an airing to some good material which wouldn't otherwise have a forum

Chris ....Glad your playing some of Robins' stuff from Temple, great artists and production quality is brilliant.

See if you can get some of Peter Nardinis' recordings from Robin,he's the authentic voice of urban Scotland and so underrated as a writer.

Davie Robertsons CD   "Star o' the bar" on Greentrax is full of origional gems. Hes as good a writer as McGinn.

Best wishes for the continued success of your show....Ake

Me again but thought I should share this. Much as I hate to draw attention to my incompatence, listening back to my Random Noises show from last week, I just realised I let the Kate Rusby bonus track run into the next track by Ozomatli. The wierd thing is, I think I actually made quite a cool bootleg, they worked really well together! Anyone else hear it?

Just a quick reminder that the new Cool as Folk is going out tonight from www.1287am.com, with a Floor Spot on the groundbreaking Martyn Bennett! And that the playback feature is working again so you've got four hours to hear last weeks show before it's gone forever. And if you fancy tuning into Random Noises the hour before please do(the scary screamy music at the start is the but end of the last show so don't be frightened!)

Check out Random Noises the hour before too if you fancy it.

Glad to hear so many were listening. I was working in the CD booth at the union yesterday and got chatting to this guy, suddenly asked, "Are you Chris? I was listening to your show!". I also played Kate Rusby's 'My Young Man' on my Random Noises show the hour before and someone on the chatroom said "Wow, this is amazing". I love the fact that I've got a dual audience of dedicated folkies and random Junction 11 listeners!

Lindsey - Yeah I saw Seth Lakeman with John Jones and thought he was a very talented musician, if I'm not too keen on his voice. Great for spreading the word. I kind of knew there was a gap in the market but I've been bowled over by the response. Here's to Cool as Folk growing and growing! I want to get involved professionally with folk music promotion so if I can get a bit of a following now it'll do me no end of good.

Bernard - Sorry I don't have a recording. I meant to ask a friend to tape it but forgot! I'll look into the possibility of recording to minidisk. Anyone else...?

Fi - Well if you want to come along one week that'd be great. Maybe a melodeon performance is in order...

Anahata - Switiching too Radio 3? Controversial! Still glad I got it. The very first play of BELLOWhead on air ever. Can't wait till their huge! Glad you got a quality sound, I was a bit worried it wasn't up to scratch.

What did everyone makes of the Pete MacGregor track? I was really impressed with his album, he's a quality songwriter. Think a lot of them could become standards if they were widely heard.

Yes, remembered to listen this time, on the 128k OGG stream - real quality stereo sound, and some good music too.

Keep it up - doing well!

I switched to R3 occasionally but no sign of Bellowhead. Anyway it's Fiona this week, more likely to get airplay from Verity next week, so I think you've got a scoop there!

What I do is to record the desk output on minidisc, which I then transfer to Audio CD and MP3...

Hey people,

Second show under the belt, think it went pretty well. Good mix of music (more variety than last week I think), my mate Andrew joined me and had Fi in the chatroom. Hope you got to listen live, archive not working, but Joff is supposed to be working on it, bless him. Rather him than me, hate pooter stuff!

For the record, here's the playlist:

June Tabor – Hughey Graham
From An Echo of Hooves (Topic)

FLOOR SPOT: Sandy Denny – Listen Listen
From Sandy (Island)

Pete MacGregor – Condoleezza's Cowboys
From When Days Were Long (Beofolk) (a Mudcat matey, email me at folkontheradio@hotmail.com if you want contact details)

Blowzabella – Spaghetti Panic
From Vanilla (Special Delivery)

FLOOR SPOT: Led Zeppelin with Sandy Denny – The Battle of Evermore
From Led Zeppelin [4] (Atlantic)

Christine Primrose – Dheanainn Sugradh Ris An Nigh'n Dubh (I would sport with the black haired girl)
From Gun Sireadh, Gun Iarraidh (Without Seeking, Without Asking) (Temple)

WORLD EXCLUSIVE: BELLOWhead – Prickle Eye Bush
From E.P.onymous (Fellside) (not realised yet, first ever play in the world!)

Fairport Convention – Who Knows Where the Time Goes
From Unhalfbricking (Island)

Seth Lakeman – Kitty Jay
From Kitty Jay (I Scream)

Fotheringay – Gypsy Davey
From Fotheringay (Hannibal)

Thanks for listening Fi and Lindsey, did you enjoy it? Who else was listening? Feedback to folkontheradio@hotmail.com! And email there if you want to send me anything.

Make sure you tune in next week!

Chris

We've got what is almost certainly the WORLD EXCLUSIVE first play of the so-new-it's-hot BELLOWhead E.P. Thanks to John Spiers! Also got a floor spot on the wonderful Sandy Denny.

Just found out my co-presenter for Random Noises the hour before has pulled out again, so I better run home and do some programming!

P.S. There's a chat room on the website so you can talk to me while I'm on air.

Oops, me again. Knew I had more to say!

Just to tell you all that John Spiers has promised to send me the freshly pressed BELLOWhead promo ASAP. He tells me it's so new his mum hasn't even heard it yet. It really is quite an exclusive, only three promo copies are going out in the world, to Verity Sharp (Radio 3), Mike Harding (Radio 2) and ME! Hopefully I'll get it by Tuesday so I can share it with you guys and we can be some of the first people in the world to hear it! Judging by their Sidmouth performance it should be unmissable!

Ooh, I've got over 50 messages and gone blue! Wow!

Remember to tune in on Tuesday, 10-11pm at www.1287am.com as the Listenback feature isn't working as yet.

Great--we need all the folk music we can get!

Now I need to get one of those hand-held, wireless internet thingy-s, so I don't have to sit in my basement with my computer to hear any folk music. (Listening to Matt Watroba, substituting in New York, right now, at http://www.wjffradio.org/ .)

If this keeps up, I'll start to feel like a mole soon...

Sorry about the website. It's possibly my fault. I've had to implement a new scheduling system over the last two weeks, and I think I broke the archiving part in the process.

I think the 'listen again' server is also down as I speak... so I think I'll have to mend that too.

Cheers,

Thanks all! Website still not working, damn it, real sorry. I'm trying to find out what's going on, but I'm crazy busy at the mo. I recommend you all try your darndest to listen live next week, 10-11pm on Tuesdays, cos I don't know when the archiving will be back up.

But I wanted to post cos I'm dead excited! Just got an email off John Spiers saying he's going to send me the new BELLOWhead EP! Wow! If you haven't heard, BELLOWhead are the new Spiers and Boden Big Band and their gig at Sidmouth was one of the most fantastic gigs I've been to in years. Such passion and energy! BTW there's supposed to be a pic of me dancing to them in this month's fRoots. Haven't seen it myself yet, but I'm the dude with short brown dreadlocks and probably green trousers.

Sorry to those of you awaiting an email reply, I'm getting through them bit by bit, hopefully I'll get a chance this weekend to sit down and reply to the lot.

Bernard - Thanks for the mic tip, I know one of the mics in there is ultra sensitive, the other dead quiet and couldn't remember which was which. Looks like I got it wrong way!

Cheers, Chris

(sorefingers) "the idea that there is a claer line dividing 'English' and the other British folk is a little silly

I agree entirely.

... which is why I get annoyed when in a session playing traditional music, somebody comes up and makes some comment about it being Irish music, when it isn't. Who's making the divisions then, and shouldn't they be educated?

Oh, how annoying...and I was just about to listen to it...sounds from people's reactions here like it went OK though Chris!.

On Kate Rusby (it was a brilliant gig) yes, I too have found she's one of the best ways of getting people to listen to the music we love...! I set myself a challenge with a heavy mrock listening friend of mine and she's now got her whole office singing The Cobblers Daughter!!. But when I played her some Eliza Carthy (off Red/Rice) she said it was too hardcore...go figure!. I'll keep at it ...;o)

You do your own thing, Chris - it's what you believe in, and what works best for you. Your listeners will enjoy it because your enthusiasm rubs off on them!

You've started as you mean to go on, so stick to your plan - and talk closer in to the microphone!! ;o)

No I can't get it to work either. Sorry guys, I'll see if I can get someone to tell me what's going on and get back to you.

Sorefingers - Firstly, the show is playing British folk which includes Scottish, Welsh and theoretically Northern Irish music as well as English music from all areas. I'm not specifically trying to focus on any areas or styles, it's just British folk music I like and have got on CD. Secondly, although I appreciate that the Irish and British music is closely intertwined, I'm trying to dispel the myth that all folk music is 'Irish'. Also I don't have enough of a CD collection of Irish music, so if I did try and address it I would be accused of underrepresenting it. Can't win. At the end of the day, all musics are intertwined, but I wanted to make this more focussed than other folk shows. I've discussed all of this earlier don't want to get drawn in on it at length.

Don't get your point about urban music? I'm sure a lot of artists and trad. music comes from cities originally. Are you talking about contemporary urban music in the Radio 1 sense, because I just don't see how that relates to what we know as folk music? I'm more than happy to play contemporary folk music from the city or the country. Cheers.

Sorry again for it not working, I'll get back to you all.

Chris

No, I can't get the page to load either. It just reloads the same one with the schedule. Can you please post to let us know when it's fixed?

Noble though your enterprise be Mr Chris, the idea that there is a claer line dividing 'English' and the other British folk is a little silly from my experience.

As far back as 197 something playing what I thought was an Irish tune - BTW when nobody cared what a folkie played as long as it was traditional and acoustic - and was corrected by a gentleman giving me what he insisted was the correct name.

Course there is a strong case to be made for promoting the superb music of the 'folk' era, Nick Jones, Martin Carthy ( isn't that an Oirish name ? ) and the rest, surely that does not mean we have to ignore the super music of lessser know regions such as Dorset, Cornwall etc.

OTOH I would not be that hasty about claiming Irish or Scottish etc music is so ethnic that it is not English. For I all of these people are English speaking - thanx to English efforts, for 2 lots of people who compose and play the music do it with English dance forms - Hornpipe -and themselves are descendents of not just any old English person but Gentlemen and Ladies.

Next beef I have with the line drawing, what about urbanmusic in London, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham etc Are these also excluded?

In short are you not turning off the true source of 'English Folk' by
restricting the audience to Victorian Shanties and Countrybumpkin rants all from the age of horsehit and habberdashers?

Have a nice English day

:0)

Don't seem to be able to listen to it via the "schedule" link as instructed - it says "cool as Folk" now (that's an improvement) but clicking on the progam )or any other) it just reloads the same page with the week's schedule.

...and I missed it live, which was stupid because I was at home and simply forgot. Duh!

Anyway, CD wrapped up and on its way shortly...
