Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: gnu Date: 01 Aug 07 - 01:59 PM What rum said... plus, I am anxious to see more pics, hear more stories and reviews. Enjoying such events vicariously through others is better than not at all! I have managed to make it an art form over the past few years. Thanks in adavnce. |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: Willie-O Date: 01 Aug 07 - 12:02 PM Wish I could've. (My constant refrain these days). But I had a gig with my daughter on Saturday morning :) and a bunch more family obligations which are taking up all my time these days (eldercare mostly). Now then. Ron Hynes = "as good a singer-songwriter as we have in Canada right now." Now THAT's excessively faint praise. Ron is the master. Right up there with Lightfoot, Tyson and Rogers--at their best, not just "right now". W-O |

Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: rehab11 Date: 31 Jul 07 - 12:06 PM LIFE IS MADE OF PRESENT MOMENTS BRUCE MURDOCK ON STAGE, FELT LIKE A MOMENT, NOT NEARLY 60 MIN FOR ME AND MANY OTHERS. His impact on everyone is supernatural, he touches there souls, he awakens their emotional ability to be present, they show up alive, and remember a form of bliss they forgot they had the capaciy to experience. I love the man there are no words to express what he means to so many. |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: Noah Zacharin Date: 30 Jul 07 - 01:41 PM chiming in. thanks for the part you all played in what turned out to be a marvelous day for this lapsed mudcatter (who signed up a couple of year's ago through my friendship with the late and lamented/loved Rick Fielding, and then didn't write for two years). I found out about the ormstown fest through a link from promo of another Quebec festival that I'm playing at the end of august. was thrilled to see that my dear friend Bruce would be there--hadn't seen him for decades and missed his music. so I drove in from toronto to see him (and other musical friends: Chris Rawlings, Terry Tufts, Swift Years, Chris Crilly) and was not disappointed. spent some wonderful time in a beautiful place with beautiful people, and it doesn't get better than that. and so all the circles intersect. even got to meet Emma B! thanks to all of you and to adrien for making it happen. nz |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: Emma B Date: 29 Jul 07 - 09:38 PM Just chilling out (actually it,s pretty hot) in a hostel in downtown Montreal. Thanks to everyone who helped to make the weekend so very special - looks like I got some video coverage too! |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: Beer Date: 29 Jul 07 - 07:44 PM Thanks Bobad. Got in about an hour ago and just had to slip in my room and do a Mudcat check. Won't write much as I still have a house full of company and also need to have a few relaxing beers. Beer I also wish I had mat you C.Ham. Adrien |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: bobad Date: 29 Jul 07 - 06:44 PM We just returned from Ormstown and let me say it was a wonderful weekend. I echo what C.Ham had to say about Bruce's set, it went by way too fast and was the highlight of the festival for me and those who gave him a standing ovation, that young man has a bright future. We met quite a few mudcatters but also missed some who didn't let themselves be known, that's you C.Ham, InOBU, ragdall (who's 1978 station wagon may have let her down). Thank you Adrien (Beer), your enthusiasm and hard work payed off in producing a festival that will not be soon forgotten. |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: C. Ham Date: 29 Jul 07 - 11:58 AM I was there for the day yesterday and had a wonderful time. I didn't get to meet too many Mudcatters, but I ran into several people that I knew on the Montreal coffeehouse scene of decades ago and haven't seen since those days. I got to chat for a moment with Bruce Murdoch but in my enthusiasm forgot to mention I also know him through Mudcat. There were some excellent performances. Bruce Murdoch was wonderful. His hour on the stage was over much too quickly. His new songs are as great, or greater, than the ones from the 1960's and 70's (although I was really hoping he'd do "Fool Like Me"). He played about half the set by himself and had some fine support from Bob Ryskiewicz on guitar and the superb Chris Crilly on fiddle for the second half. Bruce received a very moving intro from Mike Regenstreif. Ron Hynes proved himself a masterful performer and as good a singer-songwriter as we have in Canada right now. Others I really enjoyed included Chris Rawlings, Terry Tufts and the Fat Tuesday Brass Band. One disappointment was the absence of the Yonder Hill Bluegrass Band who apparently cancelled out at the last minute. I've heard some good reports about them and was looking forward to seeing them. |

Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: Beer Date: 23 Jul 07 - 09:57 PM Hay Bobad you didn't show me how to do that. Bobad gave me a lesson on how to do a blue clicky last Saturday. Real easy once you are shown other wise I'm a complete dummy at those things. Lorcan and Genie will be looking forward in meeting you both. Adrien |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: bobad Date: 23 Jul 07 - 08:43 PM We'll keep our eyes open for you. |

Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: gnu Date: 23 Jul 07 - 02:23 PM Well, of course I have choked herring. And I have chucked herring. And smoked herring. (Yes, they are hard to light, Rapaire.) I'm even hard of herring. I'll clam up, now. As the time draws nigh, I'll say I hope youse all have a great time. Raise a jar for me. Maybe next year, I'll be there to raise a jar wit' yas. Drink lots of cold water and walk slow. g |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: Beer Date: 22 Jul 07 - 10:35 PM Rough camping ( meaning no water or electrical hook up.)is free. Water/electrical $25.00 for the weekend. See you all soon Adrien |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: Charmion Date: 22 Jul 07 - 09:22 PM Refresh -- I assume Adrien is counting you among the herring-chokers, Gnu. And I bet you don't choke too many herrings either, although I'm fairly sure the process is covered in your collective agreement. Adrien, could you write a note about camping arrangements at the fairgrounds? Ch |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: gnu Date: 21 Jul 07 - 02:22 PM "...and my Herring Chocker from N.B. Gnu." For the record, I have never chocked a herring in my life. I'm pretty sure it's against the law, here. If not, it should be. I'm gonna bring it up with the shop steward at the next meeting. |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: john f weldon Date: 21 Jul 07 - 10:01 AM I just noticed that my old friend Chris Crilly will be performing on Saturday. Aside from being a terrific Irish fiddler, he composed the music & did the sound track for many of my films. Hope you all get a chance to hear him. |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: Beer Date: 20 Jul 07 - 11:45 PM Rapaire. Thanks for checking in. Sorry you can't make it as I'm sure you would have some fun. Maybe next year. Adrien |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: Rapparee Date: 20 Jul 07 - 09:54 PM I would be there if I could. I'll just have to content myself with Alberta during the first couple weeks in August. |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: Beer Date: 20 Jul 07 - 09:20 PM Sure hope it works out for you. I may be able to get a bed for you Saturday night if you want. No promises but I think I can work something out. Please do introduce yourself. Adrien |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: C. Ham Date: 20 Jul 07 - 01:18 PM Barring a last minute glitch at work, I'll be there for the day on Saturday. |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: Bee Date: 20 Jul 07 - 10:08 AM I am so jealous of you all that will be there that I've not been able to post in the thread! Husband will be working that weekend and before, so we can't make it. On the upside, you'll be spared hearing my clumsy guitar work! I know it will be a great time, and I hope to make next year, if there is one, or some other festival to meet some of you. Beer, please pm me if you plan a trip to NS - I know I can make it a few km up the road. |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: Beer Date: 19 Jul 07 - 07:24 PM Hay Raptor I appreciate what you have done in starting this thread. We have Bobad and his wife coming. Peace will be performing. Charmion and Edumond will be here Dick and Susan as well. Now we also have Ragdall coming in her 1978? station wagon from B.C. and Emma B flying in from England. Plus a new edition to Mudcat who will be leaning at the Bar is John Weldon whom once introduced I will buy a double scotch for him. Other mentions that may still show up or have been great contributors to this thread that I want to say thank you as well are Bee, Azizi, Number #6, ImBou,C.Ham, Mooh, and my Herring Chocker from N.B. Gnu. Hope I haven't forgotten anyone. If there are any mudcatters out there who are saying yes or maybe, please come. It will be memorable. If it weren't for the great support I have had here I think another festival would have been history. So thank you. Beer (adrien) |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: john f weldon Date: 17 Jul 07 - 08:57 AM So Beace and Pruce are the same guy? (it became obvious as the dialogue went on...) How come I'm the only totally non-anonymous guy here? Anyway, I saw him perform many times, always enjoyed it, and will no doubt enjoy his return, and trust that we will have an amiable encounter. |

Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: Peace Date: 17 Jul 07 - 06:06 AM Thanks. |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: Azizi Date: 17 Jul 07 - 05:08 AM Just for the record, I consider Bruce Murdoch to be one of the most intelligent members of Mudcat. And I never heard him curse well That is...I mean I never heard him curse. I mean I never seen him curse. I mean I never read him curse. I mean... Nevermind. Carry on. |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: Azizi Date: 17 Jul 07 - 04:57 AM That's a great story, John. Thanks for sharing it. But about that last line in your story, the one about Bruce being briefly struck dumb...well... nevermind... LOL! |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: Peace Date: 17 Jul 07 - 01:35 AM Definitely some other guy, John. |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: john f weldon Date: 17 Jul 07 - 01:26 AM I agree that it's a little mean to recall this story, but everyone was cranky on stage in those days, and I just thought it was funny, kind of a sign of those times.... ...but my memory is clear, he was singing Rompin Roving Days, and had just come to this line... "all my life I've been quickly cast aside, tho my handshake never meant less than your own..." ...when he stopped... ...unless there's another Bruce Murdoch? |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: Peace Date: 17 Jul 07 - 12:12 AM I am quite sure you're confusing Bruce with someone else, John. However, I will seek out the guy drinking scotch and say hello, assuming you are still going to the festival. |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: john f weldon Date: 16 Jul 07 - 11:58 PM I haven't seen Bruce Murdoch since the sixties; I mainly remember him cursing the audience in coffeehouses if anyone so much as rattled an ashtray while he sang. One evening I was listening to him at one of those Montreal coffeehouses when an older drunk came in and started muttering loudly as BM sang. He stopped in the middle of a song and said, "Excuse me sir, do you have something to say?" The drunk replied, "I was sayin', I think that's the most beautiful thing I ever heard..." Bruce was briefly struck dumb. After a long pause, he said, "Well... ...thank you..." and went back to singing.... |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: Beer Date: 11 Jul 07 - 08:17 AM Super. I sent you a p/m/ Beer (adrien) |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: InOBU Date: 11 Jul 07 - 07:41 AM Everything looks like it works for Genie and I, we are going to be in Quebec ... we will be there one of the days... I'll just figure the detail out with genie... lor |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: Beer Date: 06 Jul 07 - 09:40 PM You are correct and he should also be giving away tickets on the 26th. He will be having Ron Hynes and Bruce Murdoch live on his show on the 26th as well. We are also expecting to have free tickets on radio C.B.C. f.m. and CHOM f.m. Hopefully this will be finalized this coming week. Beer (adrien) |
Subject: RE: Canadian Mudcat Meet: Ormstown Quebec-July From: C. Ham Date: 05 Jul 07 - 11:41 PM I was just listening to the podcast version of Mike Regenstreif's Folk Roots/Folk Branches from ckutfolk.com (July 5 edition) and he mentioned that he'll be giving away some tickets to the Ormstown Branches & Roots Festival on his show of July 19. |
